CMP 1945 Springfield M1 Garand - Service Grade

I posted this over on www.thehighroad.us earlier this week but just in case you're not on Oleg's site and like to see what's coming out of the CMP these days...

My "Service Grade" CMP M1 Garand arrived this week. Order was received by CMP on 10-14, delivered 10-21. Here are a half-dozen photos to give you an idea of the condition: I was initially a bit disappointed due to the chewed up condition of the wood but after checking out and getting some feedback on the serial numbers and drawing numbers, looks like I might have gotten somewhat better than service grade. I'm inviting speculation as to what this might be worth...

I ordered service grade because I wanted a shooter not a collectable item and I believe due to the rarity of some of the parts this more appropriately belongs in the hands of a collector.

non collector-grade CMP rifles are always gonna come with lousy stocks. It's not the CMP's fault, it's how the various militaries the owned the rifles stored them (in crates, one stacked upon another with no wrapping, padding, or seperation).

When I buy my Service Grade (hopefully soon) I'm buying with the expectation that I'll have to replace the stock to be truly happy.
 
nice condition.

looks like they improved a bit from the last batch.

I was gonna order again and now this made me want to do it sooner.

Also, you can get a new stock in their e-store section.

Only time I ever got an m1 from cmp with a new stock was when I bought a field grade last go round. the stock was new, but the handguards were still the old ones.

I don't know much about M1's but thats a nice looking rifle.

I recently bought my first military rifle (m1 carbine) and i am addicted i cant stop wanting more. no particular war or side of war, i just want them all.
I have an Arisaka (not sure which) that gpa brought home. i plan on a mosin and anything else i can get my hands on.

I got my Service Grade M1 last week of September...

Has a new Boyd's birch stock.

Just got a can of the ammo in enbloc clips and a can of 400 rounds of the Greek surplus ammo. Plan on getting to the range for some serious sighting in ASAP.
 
Nice rifle, uncut op rod, lock bar sight, what is the date on the barrel? It looks to me like this rifle may have never seen an arsenal rebuild.
 
With the direction of the economy, I can't think of a better thing to invest in that weapons and ammunition.

If I took my stock money and just bought ammo, I'd be doing pretty well right now.

Anyway, anyone care to share a link to buy one of these? I'm very tempted to buy one myself.

Click on eligibility requirements, they're not too severe. I joined my state rifle association, and with the concealed handgun license on top of that I was good to go.

First purchase you have to notarize the application forms but after that you can just mail 'em in. I've been putting off buying a Garand for five years. Wish now that I hadn't waited so long.

Now's the time to buy. Especially now.
 
Awww, you're killin me! You got a $150+ bonus on the sight and probably $200+ for the unsanded, cartouched stock (would be quite a bit more if it weren't for those gouges on the right side). Is the breach end of the barrel parkerized or in the white?

Those ones are supposed to be LONG gone.

Don't forget the uncut op-rod...

Barrel's parkerized as far as I can see toward the breech.

Haven't detail stripped everything yet but as far as I can tell the only thing that's not correct is the trigger group. I see 'em on eBay and other places, is it worth swapping out for a correct one?

I'm planning to take it to my local gunsmith soon for a safety check-out and appraisal. Hopefully they can gage the barrel as well.

No, I mean when you open the action and look at the chamber, is the face (the part where the cut the feed scallop) parked? If so, then the barrel, and most likely the receiver have been reparked.

Another givaway are pits and wear patterns (look in the tracks on the receiver) that have park over them.

The barrel has the original finish. Good chance the receiver too.

Nice rifle! Very nice! Like I said, they said a couple years back that there'd be no more of that going around.

Don't do anything to the wood other than wipe of the big chunks and let it sweat out the cosmo.
