closet safe

I'm looking to protect my guns a little better but live in an apartment while attending college. I currently own one o/u 3 handguns and a rifle. I was thinking about dropping in one or two of those dehumidifying rods to keep the moisture down. Has anyone ever tried this? I'm thinking they might possibly work but I would have to close the gaps a little bit around the door but would this be possible? I cannot afford to spend 500 bucs on a safe right now.

If your apartment is air conditioned you don't even need a goldenrod. I think replacing the interior knob with a keyed locking knob is more important.

Don't discount the value of camouflage/subterfuge. Even if you can't afford a safe, keeping your guns in a box labeled "Christmas tree" or something else innocuous could be enough to through off a thief, especially if it's inside a locked closet.

the apartment is ac'ed but the clost has no vents and is usually substantially colder than the rest of the room

Criminals can be very determined individuals, so beefing up your closet might just attract more attention. Utilizing some type of concealment along with secure containers might be a better bet. A friend installed a false back in a closet in his house which was basically undetectable.

It's an apartment so I can't really do any construction work. I don't have any way to check for humidity. I was looking for more of the gun storage aspect of the gun safe rather than the fortification aspect.

Go to any sporting goods or large department storeand look for a 4 or 5 rifle locker. They are usually less than a foot deep, weigh less than 100lbs and cost around $100-150.

While these lockers only offer a modicome of security, its better than nothing.

Since most smash and grab thieves do not have the time to mess with them, most secured areas/containers are skipped by.

A $100 cabinet, secured to the floor or wall, will offer you much better protection than simply hiding them.

I live in a student apartment and cannot do any modifications to the structure

I am in the process of starting a business building gun cases. If you want, I could see about building you one for a fairly inexpensive price, made of good quality wood to look like a regular foot locker big enough to store your weapons in but with a false bottom to hide the weapons. Something like that, with pillows and blankets or clothes on top will not be a thieves first thought to search for valuables.

As cool as that sounds I live in a four bedroom apartment with three other roomates the only place of security I have is in my bedroom and there's not enough space in my room
