Clips and Magazines

A magazine completely houses the rounds, with a spring and follower that pushes the next round up so that it can be cycled into the chamber as the firearm operates.

A "clip" is often used mistakenly for "magazine." A clip is simply a strip of metal (some are simple, some are more elaborate) that holds a series of rounds (it does not completely house them, but leaves most of the round exposed). While "clips" also serve to reload a firearm, they lack the self-contained spring mechanism that a magazine uses. Also, I have never seen a handgun that uses clips--the Mauser Broomhandle may be an exception, I'm not sure. The M-1 Garand is an example of a rifle that uses a "clip," while the AR-15 uses a magazine.

That's probably more long-winded an answer than you wanted. :)
