Clip-ons

All of the hosters I've used have been the kind where you thread your belt through the slots. I see a lot of holsters for sale with metal clips that snap over the belt. Do these really keep the holster secure, and do they keep it from shifting? Any brands better or worse than others?

The clip on holsters do not work. They shift and moves around. I've seen people draw the gun and the holster come out with it, this kind of thing is funny at the range but not in self defense situations.

I agree with Ricky. You may say, "But I know plenty of people who have clip-on's and they never had a problem." Let me tell you, Murphy has a way of sneeking up on people! I would rather sacrifice a bit of convenience for my life. I would personally stick with the loops.

And when you're in a hurry, under stress, and not drawing in the same fashion as you normally practice is when Murphy is going to unclip it for you.

They tend to unclip even when things are not going to hell at the time. Most of the IWB holsters that use the metal clips are made of real soft leather that goes flat when the handgun is removed. Whatcha gonna do then?

I have one from Bianchi that fits all of my .380's. I never use it. Go with belt slide instead for small pistols.

I make a holster that is sorta a cross between a clip on and a paddle. It is secure and doesn't move yet it easy to take on or off.

If you ask Ricky T nice he will post a pic of his Talon Tactical PDL holster

I carry a Kahr MK9 every day in one

How many of you bashing clip-on holsters have tried a Lou Alessi rig? I've tried them all, and the only clips that grip tight, don't move around even while runnning, come off easily when you want them to, and don't lose their shape are the clips designed and used by Alessi. You can get them on his Talon and Talon Plus IWB holsters.

Telcolote, Lou does not use metal clips on his holsters does he? The TALON clip he uses is a different animal from the type clips we have been discussing.

You're both right. I have a Talon Plus and the clip on it is solid and will not come off. I wasn't thinking about Lou's type of clips when I responded. Like Jim suggested, those are in a different class.

Jim V,

My bad. The fast scan just doesn't work for these types of threads.
