Clearing double feed jam in Rem 870

Learned a neat trick today to clear one of these jams.......although I have never had an 870 jam on me, I have friends who have.

If you get the dreaded double feed, the action will be stuck in the open position and you will feel about 1/4-1/2 inch play in the action.

All you have to do is push the forearm as far forward as you can and clamp your hand over the forearm and barrel holding it tight in the furthest forward position. While holding it like that, push up on the shell carrier from the bottom with your other hand and hold pressure there. Next, pull the forearm back as far as you can move it, turn the shotgun so the ejection port is aimed toward the ground and one of the shells will fall loose with a little shaking.

If anyone wants to add to this feel free......

thanks ope, i haven't had one in a long time, this will help if i do.

last one i got i was at the range, went inside and the guy behind the counter popped the pins out and removed the trigger assembly.

carried a punch with me after seeing that.;)

I stood there for a good 2-3 minutes trying to shove that jammed shell back into the mag tube before he showed me the trick. It still takes about 10 seconds to do it this way, but its better than all the other alteratives. I will try to post pics and make it a little clearer when I have some time.

I carry a thin bladed folding knife that slips beside the lifting plate to push the problem shell back into the magazine.
Another option when tool-less is to remove the magazine end cap and relieve the magazine spring presure so the offending shell can fall back into the magazine.

Remington came up with a "fix" for this if you want to call it that. It is calle dthe Flextab lifter. The new lifter has a cutout in it resulting in a small tab which will flex. When you get a double feed the tab permits the round on the lifter to flex downward slightly permitting the bolt to ride over the top of it so you can still close the action. You can buy this part seperatly and install it in the older 870's than don't have them.

As an aside, if you are having this problem regularly, you might want to get your 870 checked out. This has hapened to me twice in the past 20 years of shooting 870's and may be a sign of something wrog with your 870.

Occassionally worn shell latches can cause this sort of jam,but the usual cause is poor loading technique.

I'd used 870s for 20 some years under a variety of conditions before i found out there WAS a prob.
After a mere year of instructing, I had seen it quite a few times.

Th Flextab is a fix for this, but good technique is still mandatory.

There's two ways to clear up this jam. First is for non emergency conditions, like on the range.

Make the weapon safe, keep it pointed downrange and take everything out of the magazine tube from the front. The second shell cajn then be moved forward, the chamber emptied, the action cleared and reassembled.

The second method is faster but hard on the gun, so it's used just for crises.Grip the weapon firmly, hold the slide release down and swing the thing, banging the butt against a hard, immoveable surface. This'll get the weapon operable, but I've busted off pieces of stock doing this.

Best thing is to not let this happen, practice pushing the round until you feel the click as it passes the latches.

HTH...

Just to follow up

I didnt have one of these jams, I learned this in a shotgun class earlier this week. Now that I have practiced with it a few times I can clear this jam in about 3 seconds without damage to the gun using the method he showed us. I will post pics later so you guys can see how this is done. I know a picture is worth about 1,000,000,000 of my words.
