cleaning

I"m hoping that it's OK to use Hoppe's on the polymer part of the muzzle to remove carbon build-up from shooting? What is the most common product that you folks use for this? Thank you for suggestions or comments.

There's quite a bit of stuff on here about a product called Ballistol- several of us use and swear by it. The stuff works really well and does not harm any finish, alloy, polymer, wood, or plastic. It's really been quite handy to have around the house for other uses too. One of the things I really like it that it's non-toxic. Once I got to the age in which I realized I just might not live forever- non-toxic stuff really started looking good to me.

Take a look at the link I'm a-gonna post and read up on all the uses and attributes of the stuff.

Hoppe's is generally safe for most polymers, but I find that it's overkill for most folks' cleaning needs. If I'm only running 50-100 rounds through a gun in one sitting (and I'm not using really stinky ammo), then I can get by just fine with CLP or Eezox.

The same goes for the whole assortment of brushes, jags, and other things that look like components from a Victorian torture chamber. Some folks are just overdoing it.

I was a little alarmed when reading the manual that came with my new CZ pistol. It said not to use bore cleaner on anything but the inside of the barrel. On other parts of the gun, it said it might cause corrosion in the little parts of the pistol. Is Hoppe's considered to be bore cleaner?

Yes, but it won't cause corrosion. Quite the opposite. My best guess is that they're talking about really harsh stuff like brake cleaner.

All I know is, the manual specifically referred to bore cleaner. Perhaps one reason is because the frame could be aluminium or even polymer. But they did go over cleaning the other parts just the same.

So is Hoppe's considered a bore cleaner or not?

Hoppes has lots of products. What specific Hoppes product are you asking about?

Maybe when they speak of "bore cleaner" they are speaking of some of the more heavy duty powder/lead/copper solvents. I wonder why they are so vague with the description? "Bore cleaner" could mean anything.

I use nothing but CLP and an occasional shot or two of GunScrubber or the Hoppes equivalent. I have never had any issue with a polymer gun, or polymer parts on a non-polymer gun being damaged by any product labeled for use on guns. I don't leave guns soaking in anything and I always wipe off excess.

Been using Meguiare automotive Plastic/Vinyl cleaner /conditioner on mine.

Same as their polish, works well and brings back that 'new gun' smell. :D
