Cleaning rod and barrel damage?

Another question:

I have heard people talk about the damage that a cleaning rod can do to a barrel. It seems to me that the softer metal of the rod would not damage a barrel... but alas, that's why I ask the question, I just don't know.

Will someone elaborate in this?

John. probably the most damage come from aluminum rods. They're soft and can pick up all sorts of grit. Primer residue, for example contains ground glass, and you know how hard glass is. Jointed rods probably rate as the number two damager (Is that a word?) of barrels. Some people like the plastic coated one piece type, but I would think that they'd pick up grit as well. Even good solid one piece steel rods mat pick up grt so I wipe mine down frequently while cleaning my guns.
I use bore guide on all my bolt actions, and on rifles that must be cleaned from the muzzle, I use a special coned shaped tool that protects the muzzles crown and rifling.
The only multiple piece rod I use is one in my backpack for emergencies, like a stuck case while out on a hunt. I've never had to use it on my guns, but I have freed stuck cases for others.

John, I like Paul agree on the aluminum rods and the wear caused at the muzzle when cleaning from that end. Over zealous cleaning is what causes most of the muzzle wear on auto rifles such as the Garand and the M14. Personally my rods are brass and a homemade steel one. When possible I clean from the chamber end, and if not possible use a guide to stay away from contact with the muzzle.

Dewey or Boretech coated rods are the choice of highpower and smallbore shooters I know. My second choice is SS rod and always use a guide when cleaning from either end with any rod. Dewey makes great bore guides for any rifle you may have. Just my opinion.
