Cleaning revolver cylinder with snake?

Hey all I got a quick question. With my new GP 100 I purchased a snake sized for 38, 357, and 9mm. I was sick of brushes and what not. I also got some break free so I do not have to deal with lame oders of old hoppes. Anyway I love the snake on the barrel but I run it through each of the 6 cylinders and it is fairly hard to pull through. Is this going to damage the gun or mess up the timing causing it to not line up right? I am new to revolvers and not sure what all goes on there. I finally figured if I hold the cylinder very tight it goes through easier. Am I putting undue stress on anything? Is this the way any of you clean the inside of cylinder?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I do mine like that.

Mostly when I feel lazy and don't want to do it more methodically.

I don't think you'll hurt it by rubbing some cotton against it. It does contain small explosions, remember?:)

BTW, I feed the snake from the grip, towards the end of the barrel when running thru the cylinders. What direction are you running it thru?

I use (and recommend) a .40 S&W Bore Snake. Break Free is not really a cleaner (despite the CLP label)--it just keeps the crud soft. You might want to consider a real cleaner (like Hoppes or Ed's Red).

I use that method, same direction, on my wheelguns. Works great.

yeah

I run that direction also. One more thing. It was stated that break free will not clean it too well. What about Hoppes elite? I heard it was non toxic and doesn't stink but is a cleaner and lube and protectant all in one. better than break free?

Thanks all

Hold it by the cylinder ONLY when brushing or snaking. You can bend the crane very easily if you don't.

I've had real good results with either Hoppes #9 or Hoppes Elite. Excellent cleaner. I use Breakfree when I'm at the range. It keeps the weapon clean enough and functioning until I can get home and do a more in-depth cleaning.

News to me on the Break Free. :) Been using it to clean everything I shoot for about 20 years, works fine for cleaning on my guns.

Yeah Breakfree is okay. I spent many years in the Army and Breakfree was used for everything. The Army bought it by the gross. But I also discovered that when it was time for in-depth cleaning of my M-16 or the M-249 SAW I finished sooner then others when I used Hoppes #9 along with some type of lead cleaner. They were just more efficient cleaners then Breakfree. And I remember at one time we were told we could only use Breakfree. I still used the other cleaners, but kept them in a Breakfree bottle. I did give a final wipe with Breakfree. If for no other reason then that the armorer would smell it whne I turned in the weapon. In many ways I'm glad I'm a civilian now.

Nothing cleans a cylinder better or faster than a bore brush put into a chuck of a cordless drill at low speeds. A tip I got from this forum.
