Cleaning question: stainless steel cylinder

Does anyone recommend a mild abrassive that can be used to remove old dark rings on a stainless stelel cylinder (S&W)? The Hoppe's "toothbrush" & solvent isn't getting it done. Can a fine steel wool be used? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Thanks.

It sure isn't a "dumb" question. All of us like our Stainless cylinders without blast rings! As one poster said, the lead away cloth or patches does it well. Don't use those cloths on a blue gun though.

Plus one more for Kleen bore lead away cloth. Takes those nasty rings right off. Does a great job around the forcing cone as well. ;)

cleaning a revolver cylinder

This is a repeat of info in a previous post, but . . .

Try Slip 2000 Carbon Cutter. You can order a big jar of it and drop the whole cylinder in and let it soak for 20 or 30 minutes. Also works good to clean carbon off the bolt of an AR-15/M-16. www.slip2000.com.

KG-1 carbon cutter is also a good product, although I have more experience with Slip 2000. www.kgcoatings.com.

The "Lead Away" cloth works really well unless the fouling is heavy.

For lead build up, try Shooter's Choice lead remover. www.shooters-choice.com.

The problem with a blued gun is, the bluing is not all that durable.

In removing the carbon, you usually wind up doing more damage to the blue than if you just clean enough to prevent build-up from causing the cylinder to rub on the rear of the barrel.

You CAN remove most of the carbon, but the bluing is going to take a beating, and you'll wear it down to bare metal fairly fast.

The best, least harmful method I ever found was to use a brass "toothbrush" and powder solvent to scrub the cylinder face.

ANY polish, no matter HOW fine will quickly remove the bluing.
Even fine polishes like Flitz are STILL abrasive and will wear the bluing off.

I do use CRC Brakleen aerosol too. It is aided by a old nylon brush that I softened by rubbing it over medium sandpaper. (100 grit)

Any suggestions on a specific product to use on a blued gun (since I have one of those as well)?

ProShot makes a metal conditioner cloth secifically for blued guns. It works quite well, especially the more times it's used on a gun.
