Folks,

Is there a maker of a quality cleaning kit for both rifles and pistols? I mean a BIG kit! I am so tired of wally world type kits. I must have bits and pieces of many kits. I want to throw it all away and start again. Can someone please provide me with a name and source if it exist. Thanks, HARDBALL (Portland,Maine)

Not a conventional cleaning rod system; but a flexible rod pullthrough. Have their tactical kit, seems to have rifles covered, although they have an "ultimate" kit that seems to contain every single part they have. Different patch system too, and an obstacle removal attachment that, believe it or not, works.

Of course, being that I have an M1A, this kit is all the more useful for "chamber to muzzle" cleaning.

I think Midway sells an all-encompasing kit.
I like the ProShot rods and then I buy jags and brushes for whatever caliber and guages I need. I've got the pistol, rifle, and shotgun rods. Also have a Dewey rod which has had much use with no complaints.

I also recommend the Otis kit. I first got one so that I could clean my Garand from breech to muzzle. For that it works very well.

However, the kit is so small handy that I started using it for everything. I haven't used a regular cleaning rod since.

After trying virtually every kind of cleaning rod, I tried the Otis system. To coin a phrase - "it don't git no bedder than this." Get an Otis system and you'll throw away all the rest of your cleaning stuff (or at least retire it). ;)

Whatever you do, don't use those jointed screw together rods. They'll gorch your barrel in a hurry. Yeah, the long rods are a hassle, but hey... Just get a length of PVC and cap the ends...

I recommend either Dewey or Pro-Shot rods, benchrest-quality brushes, and the bronze/brass jag of your choice. Lester Bruno sells some very nice patches. Top it off with some nice bore guides and a coupla jars of Butch's Bore Shine, and you're ready to rock.

Ditto on Otis. However, all of my kits are "piecesparts", some companies make better tools than others. My rifle stuff is more involved than my pistol, which is a couple brushes, a rod, and a jag.
The rifle stuff, that is another story. Dewey rods and guides, although Sinclair offers a better rod guide. Dewey brushes, Sinclair jags, one could go bonkers trying to build a perfect cleaning kit. Lord knows I have tried. Midway, you can't beat it.

Is there a good jag that fits the Otis?

I've started using the 30cal brush as a Jag; but am probably toasting it (ordered a NEW brush to be safe).

Battler;

With the Otis system, since you're PULLING the swab (and the brush) through the bore rather than pushing it, there's no need for a jag. You can get either the Universal or Tactical system and it will have everything you'll need. I got mine through Midway USA (no shipping charges). It's really the original "Boresnake". ;)

I HAVE the Otis Tactical.

I'd like to be able to pull through "tight" patches with conventional patches - preferably regular 30cal patches. Wrapping around a jag would do it, though I probably scrood a brush pulling it through.

Good way to do this? (Without going to the hassle of punching out real big patches and imitating their special patch).

(I have a new 30cal brush on the way though, along with 200 Otis patches - still would prefer regular, though).

Overall, however, Otis system is GREAT. Especially when using it with a gun like an M14/M1A.

BTW - their bore obstruction remover system? It works, it really does - aah believe.
