im a newer group member and handgun owner. i bought a Sig 225 a couple of months ago and have taken it to my local shooting range. My question is how often should i clean my firearm?

Clean & lube after each range session...You & the pistol will feel better for a good nights' sleep....:) Now, after saying this you'll get replies ranging from what I said to "every thousand rds" to "Never!"...Just think for moment, and you decide...;)

I clean after every use. Depending on the gun, it might be necessary to ensure reliability. Others, like your Sig, can usually go for a while before being cleaned and still operate reliably. However, I would still recommend cleaning and lubing after each use.

+1 on Magyar. Get in the habit of cleaning it after you shoot it. First, its a good habit for all firearms. Second, it prevents any rust or corrosion from setting in. Third, its clean when you pick it up to go shoot again so you won't be slowed down at the range with failures feed or fire because of carbon build up. Follow the manual for the cleaning procedure. I always make the last past down any barrel with a patch with Hoppe's #9 so that the barrel has a coating in it. Rem Oil or similar works fine too.

I clean every time I shoot, whether it's 10 rounds or 100. I'm a little compulsive that way, but I can't stand the thought of a dirty gun. Besides, the gunk can build up pretty fast and I can't imagine that it's doing the gun any good.

I find that cleaning is actually relaxing. Also, it gives me a chance to thoroughly check out the gun for loose screws or any other problems that might be apparent to the naked eye.

If you oil the barrel with your last patch I recommend always running a dry patch through the barrel before shooting it. This is probably more important when shooting rifles, but not a bad habit.

I won't discourage you from cleaning after every range trip, but I don't find it necessary. Mine get cleaned a few times a year and I don't see any failures due to the powder fouling, etc. I do add a drop or two of CLP to my auto's slide rails before every session.

Think part of it depends on usage. IE my carry gun gets cleaned after every trip whether I shoot 1 round (yeh right:-) or 400 (more likely). My plinkers 2 times a year or when they look dirty. Same with my shotguns - trap gun every time occasional hunter once a season.

If you do clean every time you use it you never have to wonder when you cleaned it last.
