cleaning frequentcy

I clean my pistol every time I shoot. Doing a basic field strip and clean: barrel, slide, frame and guide rod. Reaching in the nooks and cranies with Q-tips and small bottle-brushes. When or how often should I completely disassemble for cleaning? Pulling out all springs, pins......how far to go?

It kind of depends on how clean you want it. If it is a carry weapon and you shoot it a lot, you may not need to clean it extremely well because you'll just get it dirty again in a few days. If you just took out Grandpa's Colt for it's yearly exercise, you will probably want to scrub it spotless when you get home.

The guns I shoot on a regular basis will get a detail cleaning every 1000 rounds or so.
All my guns get a good field "strip 'n clean" after every shooting session I use them.

When I went through basic training in the '60s my drill instructors insisted that my weapon be stripped down and spotlessly cleaned regularly (whether fired or not). In the Academy in the early '70s we had our handguns inspected every morning in formation. ANY dirt was unacceptable.

These days it seems unaccetable to detail strip you firearm on a regular basis and on another board I was taken to task for suggesting it. Is this a generational thing (getting more and more lazy as a society) or was dirt just more distructive in the "old days"?
