cleaning an sks

hi all,
im in the process of buying an sks from a friend of mine, comes with the rifle, sling, scope mounts and all the goodies.
also comes with 1000 rounds of non corro ammo and about 200 of the corrosive stuff.

can i clean the barrel after shooting off the corrosive stuff with just the regular oils, patches, etc?

any special stuff i would need? i would rather not have to take down the gun just to clean it.

i saw another thread on cleaning corrosives on a bolt action IIRC,but im wondering about my sks.
i would rather just shoot off all the corrosvie stuff soon, and not have it sitting around.

In my opinion....just go bury the bad stuff. Or you could shoot it up and go do a major cleaning job. Sorta like Black powder rifles...I shot one once, I cleaned one once and I own one now. Well, I inherited it and NO I wont be shootin in........Boiling water, black powder and corrosive powder are about the same......PIG DUNG.
7.62x39 is cheap.......stay away from Corrosive.

Just me

i might just do that...

bury it...
not a bad idea, plus i will still have the thousand rounds left to go through.

if i do bury em is there any precuations i need to take? maybe pull them apart (can you do that and not get hurt?) and spread the powder on the garden...

You can pull them apart with an impact bullet puller, which uses inertia to dislodge the bullet from the case.

I would agree that the corrosive 7.62x39 is best left unfired, considering how cheap the non-corrosive stuff is. Cleaning a gas operated rifle like the SKS after firing corrosive ammo is no fun, whereas it's a relatively simple matter with a bolt action.

You might not need to go to the trouble of dismantling that ammo though, in fact there is a chance it may be some of the old steel core. What is the headstamp?

i dont have the ammo in front of me,so i couldnt tell you the headstamp.

but i think ill just toss the corrosive stuff, and go buy one or two thousand rounds of the good stuff.
