Cleaning an 870 marine magnum barrel

correct me if I'm wrong, but I have always thought that the marine magnum was completely stainless, not nickel plated.

It's basically an 870 Express with an inner and outer nickel finish. May also have a little better fit/smoothness since they might have to clean up the corners and edges better for the nickel finishing process, but I'm not certain about that.

It's definitely not a stainless shotgun.

A standard bronze brush will not harm the bore.

If it just worries you, use a synthetic brush.

Note, that one round fired down the bore is far more abrasive than any brush.

I've been scrubbing my mm with a brass brush for about 6 months now. After scrubbing and flushing I do the final swabs with a lightly oiled patch (old t-shirt) and when I look down the barrel it still looks like glass. Will post if I ever see a scratch.

the e-less nickel plating is actually HARDER than the barrel steel, around 45 Rc vs. around 35 Rc.

If e-less is precipitation hardened, it can Rockwell up to 65, or nearly as hard as hard-chrome...don't know if Remington does this or not.

Flail away with the brass brush all you want!
