cleaning a single shot?

Just picked up H and R Ultra Varmint...I'm used to bolt guns/bore guides when it comes to cleaning. how do you clean your H and R? just have at it with the rod/jag, from the breech end? seems like there should be a guide of some sort!!

you can and should use a bore guide from the breech end. The rod will wear on the chamber shoulders and the start of the rifling just as it would at the muzzle.
If you dont have one that already fits your rod you should be able to get one at your local gun store.

Hello, Bolson. I also am a single-shot rifle fan. You might want to check with Sinclair International or Brownells..they are affliated now. I know they have a nylon one for the TC Contender. What I do..and here a lathe come in mighty handy..I drill or ream out primer pocket for slip-fit on cleaning rod. Depending on caliber..I also bush case neck..brass stock works well & I used to soft-solder these in but, now I use Locktite bearing retainer. While it may not have the length of guidence of a longer bolt-action guide, it does help keep the rod/jag from wearing throat.

you can use the same one that you use on your bolt gun but the kind that comes as a part of the rod assembly would probably be easier to use. It is just a cone with a hole in it to center the rod in any size hole. About an inch long maybe less

you might also look at a bore snake. no rod just a string with a brush braided in. It is 3 to 4 feet long and solvent, brush, patch and oil in one stroke for quick cleaning but I still use the rod for a good thorough cleaning every couple times at the range

big al hunter....would rather not use the snake...

are you talking about the little brass cones that one would usually use as a muzzle guide on a firearm that can't be cleaned from breech end?

If you need to clean from the muzzle, save yourself some money and take apart a ball point pen. The lower portion has a hole inside tapered just like the outside. Cut it back till your cleaning rod will just pass thru. Put it on your cleaning rod, add the brush or patch tip and you have an instant bore protector. Never tried it from the chamber end but I suppose most chambers are larger than a pen. Goatwhiskers

Yes the brass ones work well, they also come in plastic but they don't last as long I would use the brass one. Avoid aluminum as aluminum oxide is an abrasive and could transfer into the bore leading to excessive wear on the bore.

Hello, BOLson. Concerning a bore snake..Would you drag a filthy cleaning patch back and forth through your bore..how about one from last week? That is about what your doing with one of them snakes.

I just use a cleaning rod very carefully to clean it most of the way and finish it off with a boresnake. I have one for most of my guns. They do a great job and are easy to clean after use.

just toss the boresnake in the laundry it comes out just like brand new. :D don't knock it till you tried it. No it will not replace a brush and jag cleaning altogether, but it makes a darn quick cleaning on a tight schedule without causing rod damage!!!
