cleaning a prohunter

How do you clean your TC or other break open style rifle? I'm currently using a Tipton rod with a brass jag but I don't have a guide for it which I don't like. I've used the Gunsllick ones on my .204 barrel and it at least kept it from rubbing in the barrel when coming back through but it still made contact occasionally. So I'm open to suggestions before I damage the barrel. Thanks

as long as youre cleaning from the breech end i dont think id worry about hurting the barrel. Now the few times ive had to clean my from the front i do use a small 50cal insert that protects the crown

Clean from the breech, don't push the jag all the way out. That's all I do.

If you're worried that the rod tapping the insides of the barrel might cause damage, you're cleaning your gun too much.;)

Powder residue is not corrosive with modern components. It won't hurt a thing. Clean the barrel when accuracy degrades, or before long-ish periods of storage in which case leave a good coat of oil.

You are right to be concerned and you most certainly can hurt the bore without a guide. Sinclairs sells caliber specific single shot guides that act as an insert to offer a margin of protection for something like 15 bucks.

I'll check on sinclair. thanks for the info. maybe it wouldn't hurt but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Just ordered from Sinclair. it came to less than $15. Should have posted before I cleaned it the first time. Hopefully I didn't damage anything with the first cleaning.

You didn't.

I've cleaned every gun of every kind that I've ever owned with metal cleaning rods and no bore guide. I've never noticed a decline in their accuracy or any reason to believe I caused any harm whatsoever.

Maybe my not being a 1000 yard match shooter just means I don't notice. Anything's possible but at the limits of my ability it has never mattered a whit.

Be aware though that you're more likely to hurt you gun (barrel) by cleaning too much than too little.

very true. I'm not a fanatic about cleaning since I got that piece of advice early on. If its decently clean I let it go. I'm in the same boat as you and i'm happy with hunting accuracy. I don't need 1000 yard accuracy out of my guns being that I'm the limiting factor.
