cleaning .22 with a boresnake

I got a boresnake to clean my .22 after I got sick of using patches and it works great. However, does the snake really get the bore as clean as a brush and patches? Any tips for cleaning smallbore rifles?

First, .22s don't need a lot of cleaning. Lots of people have never cleaned their 10/22s.
Excessive cleaning is also a way to damage the bore or the crown.

I've used Hoppes #9 and it works for me.

No, but clean enough. If you get most of the crud out most of the time, that's good enough. Now and then, you've got to clean a gun thoroughly, but speaking strictly as a guy who's always kept his guns squeaky clean: there's no need for it.

Hello, gringojosh. Would you shove the same old dirty used cleaning patch into your bore each time you cleaned? Of course not..but unless your washing that snake out thoroughly after each use, thats about what your doing. Check out www. Rimfire accuracy forum.com. And see how many guys are using them there!

It's all I use... a dirty old nasty snake.
still trying to actually need to clean the bore on one of my 22s but I do it anyway every so often regardless... Kind of like that queen of England who took a bath once a year whether she needed one or not.... need to have some discipline.

My routine is to run through a patch soaked in Hoppe's #9, wait 15 minutes, and then boresnake it.

That said...

+1.

I use it on my .22's, .38's and my 9mm. I have run a patch through after using the snake and surprisingly the patch came out clean. It's a great way to clean between patch and rod cleanings.

I have two bone stock 10/22 rifles, one is 15 years old, the other two years old. Neither one has had a brush or a rod down the bore. After shooting, I push a patch soaked in Hoppe’s down the bore using a piece of weed eater string. One more patch a couple days later. Wipe out the “big chunks” from the bolt area, couple drops of oil, and it’s done until the next time. The 15 year old 10/22 works great, and shoots 3 inch groups at 100 yards all day long with cheap ammo.

I run target ammo through my 10/22's and my Kimber 82G. I only use a dry patch to help clean the chamber. Since match ammo is wax-coated, I think the only thing I can do, is to hurt the accuracy. The bore actually "tightens up" with the ammo.
