Clean and oil a new AR15?

I've got a new-in-box Bushmaster Shorty (my first AR15). Do I need to lubricate the gun before my first range session, or is it ready to go out of the box?

Thanks

Might as well. At the very least, always run a clean patch through the bore of a new gun before shooting. I think Bushmaster has a cleaning, lubricating and maintenance section at their website. Take a look see there. Your owners manual will help with lube suggestions as well. Have Fun!

Uh, I second that. Make sure to clean the bolt well and lube it up with LSA or a suitable synthetic really light but thoroughly. This will make cleaning the gun much easier next time.

Pipper - I assume this is your first AR? If so, welcome!

Using CLP only will be perfectly sufficient to keep your Bushie cleaned and well lubed. If you want, Tetra grease can be used on high wear areas like the cam pin, etc.

For proper cleaning, make sure that you have a chamber brush. The rifle can be surprisingly tolerant of neglect, but keep those locking lugs clean! The chamber brush does a good job of getting most of the gunk out of the locking lugs in the barrel extension.

Applying lubrication to the lugs on the bolt is generally discouraged. My suggestion is to use just a dab of CLP behind each lug on the bolt. It won't gunk up, and you'll reduce wear.

Just my .02 :)
