Clays--BBL Length?

I shoot primarily skeet if I ever get my butt to the field, but want to try trap and sporting clays.

Is 26" a good length, or am I better off with 24" or 28"

I am selling my SBE but want to get another barrel for my M1S90 so I can leave it around as a defensive shotgun. I shoot clay only several times a year, so not sure if it's worth getting a dedicated shotgun for it.

I prefer to have just 1 gun for now, but don't want a bunch of O/Us and things for each type of game. Is it possible to have a do-it-all barrel length?
 
There's no bbl length that's optimum for all games and shotgunners,Skunk. But we can come closer than you might think by avoiding the extremes.

21" is short enough for "Serious" work and long enough to have not such a muzzle light "Feel". The 870 Express Turkey model with its 23" bbl may be another choice shading into the recreational role.

Alla samesame, shooting clays and birdhunting with one's "Serious" shotgun is great practice. You probably won't win many trophies but nobody will have more fun....
 
I shot a round of informal skeet with an 18" Win 1300 defender once. Did okay, for me. I prefer 'em longer than that, though.
 
For years Skeet shooters used 26" bbls. Now everyone has 30". Trap shooters gravitate to longer barrels.

If you can shoot the short barrels and hit clays, who cares what length you use.

For an Auto, a 28" bbl is a good compromise.
