Clay shooting with 20 inch no choke shotgun

I'm interested in trying some clay shooting (it looks fun), but I don't want to buy any extra equipment. I've got a Mossberg 590 12 gauge (20 inch barrel) with ghost ring sights. I know this is not ideal for shooting clays, but would this setup work. I'm not interested in competing, so the “ideal” setup is not important. I just want to know if using this equipment will just cause frustration.

It's not ideal, but use it anyway. You'll bust birds, have fun, and get proficient with your WIHTF gun, allasametime.Try Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays, see what you like and what kind of shots come hard.

Of course, you COULD go buy a 28" bbled 500 and have commonality of controls and a weapon more suitable to those activities, it's your call.

I use an 870 for everything, and while trap with my TB may not appear to have much revelance to "Serious" shotgunning, rapid target acquisition comes easy after a few thousand rounds of singles and easier after shooting doubles.

And don't worry about the Yuppies with the Perazzis snickering, you're armed and for all they know, off your meds. They'll behave (G)...

Thanks for the advice. I think, I'll try it with my 590 as is and if I really get into it, I might buy the 28 inch barrel.

Both of these will take them out as good as a Perazzi if you do your part...

All my clays are busted with either a

1. 20" no choke Side by Side, or

2. 20" no choke Beretta automatic

Have at it!:D

Hey folks,

When home, I use whatever interests me on any particular day: O/U, pump, auto, 12, 16, or 20 ga. When my wife and I are on the road for weeks or months at a time, we carry one shotgun, a Mossy 500 with 20 inch cylinder bore barrel and full length magazine. Even with the cylinder bore barrel, we can stop to shoot claybirds when the opportunity arises. We cannot hit them on the far shots, but we do well enough on the closer ones. You might think people would say something when the two of us share the same gun while shooting sporting clays, but we have never had a bad comment made while doing it. Actually, when folks find out we are sharing because we are traveling in our camper, they usually are eager to learn where we have been and where we are going. We do meet some nice folks shooting clay birds.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Lots of fine, friendly folks on gun ranges, David, even those onery ol' trapshooters(G).

S'funny, a short bbled repeater with a mag to the muzzle handles like most O/Us of the same weight to me. And that 20" bbled 500 is probably longer than a field model O/U with 26" tubes.
