"Classic" 270s and 30-06s...

Help me out here, please. When one thinks of a classic hunting rifle chambered in 270 Winchester, you think of the Winchester Model 70 w/ pre-64 action. But what "classic" hunting rifle is the home of the 30-06? Knowing that the 30-06 started out as a martial cartridge, I don't want to sporterize a Springfield military rifle. Thanks

How about a Springfield that has already been sporterized? The NRA sporters and Sedgley Springfields from the 20's and 30's come to mind... Beautiful rifles and great shooters...and American classics. My grandfather had one of the NRA sporters that was a genuine tackdriver, and had a great looking piece of lumber, too. The sporters and the Sedgleys seem to pop up here and there, but they seem to be getting pricey.

From before 1960: For factory guns, the Model 70 and the Remington Model 7 (I think that's the right number; it was sort of a knockoff of the Enfield 1917.) I just don't recall much else to drool over, back when I was a kid and dreaming...

Beaucoup Springfield sporters; for instance, my father built up two of them. My uncle built a fair number of '06s on WW II "souvenir" Mauser actions. I sporterized a 1917 '06 as my first centerfire.

My opinion is that the gun enthusiasts of today's world have a whole bunch more money to spend--or are willing to spend more--than "back then". Probably a lot more handloaders, today. And certainly, a helluva lot more choices.

for the 30-06 it is the Rem model 30. the Remington US-1917 in the factory sporter mode. The first 06 sport bolt gun on the market and hard to find now.:)

And don't forget the Winchester Model 54, the Model 70's predecessor.
Remington beat Winchester to the market after WWI by modifying their 1917 Enfield military rifle to a sporter configuration, but Winchester laid a better foundation by designing a totally new rifle that didn't come out till 1925. It had some flaws, being all around just a little too light, but when metamorphized into the more substantial Model 70 in 1935, became a classic with true staying power.
