Class 3 license

To my knowledge, a class 3 license allows you to own fully automatic guns. I'm sure there are other perks and aspects to this license that many of you know about than I do. My question is, do any of you guys have this for hobby purposes? (or at all) Are there many people that acquire this other than for business reasons? (just to be able to have a fully auto gun)? Please enlighten me!

If you are refering to the Curio and Relic Firearms License, it is a license that allows you to purchase firearms that are 50 years old or older, and have them shipped to your house.
I have this license, and have used it to acquire some older Military Surplus Rifles and a few pistols.
I do not think its the same license for full auto weapons.
I wouldnt want a full auto weapon anyway, I enjoy my surpluss bolt actions.

You dont need a license unless you want to be a dealer.

You pay a tax, $5 or $200, depending on the item, file your paperwork with the ATF, and wait for them to do a background check on you. These days, in about 4-6 months, you get your stamp and the gun, or suppressor, etc.

This. Additionally, legal machine guns are getting really expensive now.

Class 3 license allows you to buy and sell full auto. A full and complete background check along with a $200 tax stamp per purchase allows you to own class 3 merchandise, as long as where you live allows such purchases. Full auto prices depend on what you want. Wore out junk in pistol calibers can be had for less than $2000, but decent class 3 rifles will set you back $15,000 and up, way up!

I may be wrong, but I'm 95% sure class 2 is the bad boy, meaning pretty much full reign on almost anything you want or can build/convert. Say, RED JACKET FIREARMS would fall under class 2. Although i understand that there is pitfalls to someone who only wants the license for personal collection or use, such as you having to sell a certain number of guns as if were a buisness, and the last i checked it was like $3,000 a year just to be a holder of class 2, and advantage is guns are usually somewhat cheaper under class 2 vs. class 3. I think C+R is an in between license. So for the one time purchase, apply for the permit wait the time period and pay $200 vs. all the red tape of the others.

There is a difference between FFL's, and SOT's (Special Occupational Tax Classes) that require FFL's in addition.

Read up here:

As long as there are no state or local restrictions, you can own a transferable MG as stated above. These must be "pre-ban" MG's...

Otherwise you must have a Class 3 SOT to be a dealer (buy/sell NFA weapons).
