Last month there was a topic on Muzzle Brakes.

Someone mentioned the Clamp on Brake and how well they worked.

I'm a big fan of muzzle brakes so I thought I would give the clamp on style a try. Well I did.

Ordered one for my 416 Rigby, installed it per directions AND......

First shot sent the bullet and brake to never never land.

I measured the muzzle diameter and the diameter at 1 1/2 in back from the muzzle like you are suppose to when I ordered the brake, measured it again before I installed it, and again after the brake departed to another zip code. All three measurements were the same.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Its a dirty job,but someone has to do it !!!

I hope the setscrews didn't do damage to the barrel.

Was it a Kahntrol? Sounds like it... If it is, it doesn't have set screws. Three allen screws each side. When torqued/tightened evenly to spec I can't imagine how it could move as it's machined to a precision fit.

Did it seem to fit correctly? When you measured, how oversize was the brake at the two locations? Mine was as snug as a gnat's you-know-what, and hasn't moved in 1K rounds...but the 7-08 isn't burning 100 grains...

I'm still surprised it let go on the first round. Have you called the manuf?

The Witt Machine brake is superior to the Kahntrol. The Kahntrols are aluminum wheras the Witt brakes are tool steel.

I'd say a 416 would be equally brutal to both, however.
