Civilian Marksmanship Program Questions, Help Needed.

Hey all I have a question that I hope that someone can answer for me. I have seen on here that many of you have obtained an M1 Garand from the Civilian Marksmanship Program and I am interested in doing the same.
I went to the web site anr read what they had to say about the program but i am in a bit of a jam. I live in an area of the country that has no affiliated clubs that are on the list. The closest one is about 2 hours away. The area that I am in also does NOT have any shooting ranges either pistol or rifle or any competitions.
Where I live here in Ohio I am right on the border of West Virginia and Kentucky. I have checked fro clubs in those states as well and there are no closer ones there either.
What can I do to be able to buy the M1 Garand from the CMP? Can I join a club by mail? What do I do about the marksmanship qualifications that they have considering that I have no place that I can go to do this?
I know that this is a lot to ask for you all to help with but i am really interested in what the best course of action would be for me. Should I just get the M1 from an aftermarket supplier and forget the whole CMP program or what?

Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

I joined an affiliated CA state organization, specifically the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) by mail.

Nalapombu,

In order to be eligible to place an order for an M1 (or any merchandise) from CMP you will have to comply with at least 1 of the following:

1 Marksmanship qualification firing.
2 Have Military Discharge papers.
3 Be over 60 years of age.
4 Be a serving LEO

Lacking any one of # 2-3-4, you don't have any other option but to find a CMP club, join, and fire a qualifier match. Note: most CMP clubs have "loaner" rifles for you to use in your qualifier.

In addition to one of the above, you MUST be a member of a CMP affiliated club. It does not have to be one "near" you. It can be your state shooting association (assuming they have CMP affiliation).

Re the 2 hour driving time to nearest CMP club.... Look at this from the CMP's point of view. Their purpose of existence is to promote civilian marksmanship through competition and by providing a source of rifles & ammo for those in the "Civilian Marksmanship" program. If you are unwilling to join one of their clubs and drive the 2 hours to shoot a qualifier, they have no reason to believe that you will continue as a competitor in the programs that they exist to promote. Remember, their purpose in selling surplus M1's is in providing rifles to COMPETITORS who (in your case) will drive the 2 hours to the matches that they hold. They don't exist just as a means for you to "get an M1".

Best regards, & Good luck,
Swampy

As Destructo6 said, join by mail and if you are are a veteran or a police officer etc. the 50 round firing requirement is waived also.

The Miami Rifle and Pistol in Milford, OH has CMP clinics and you could join there. Here's a link
http://www.miamirifle-pistol.org/

Also, the Zanesville Rifle Club shoots at Blue Rock State Park and membership is only $25 a year. Both of these clubs have CMP clinics that satisfy the shooting requirements. I think since the Season is over, there aren't anymore clinics but there's always next year! Also check out the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Assoc. @:
http://www.orpa.net/

They can be joined my mail and satisfy the membership requirement. I shoot with a guy from Portsmouth, OH and he shots at a range in WV that's only an hour away but I don't know the name or location. I hope this helps and good luck!

I guess I have a question on this as well.

I understand that there is some kind of "qualifying weekend" held at Camp Perry each Spring. You join a club, have a day of classes and then hit the range. You can spend the night in one of the old barracks buildings then you go back to the range on Sunday to qualify. When you're done, you get the papers that let you buy an M1 Garand from CMP.

All this is second-hand hearsay and I would just like to get some first-hand hearsay to either refute or confirm this info.

Anyone done this?

I'll throw something in here. Don't give up on the CMP Garand. If you wan't to join a club, by all means but you don't have to be a member of the club to shoot thier matches you just need to be an NRA member. You can shoot an NRA match or CMP match each will meet the requirement. Most clubs I know of in Ohio have open NRA and CMP matches, clinics, etc. You can pay ORPA(Ohio Rifle and Pistol Assn.) $18 and your now a member of a CMP affiliated Assn. Also being a member of ORPA you get thier newsletter and it lists all the matches in the Ohio area. All you need to do is pay the match fee and shoot a 50 rd. match and your golden.

If you need some more help drop me a line: delong@ameritech.net .

I'm a member of Zanesville Rifle Club and is a great place to get started as they realy do a good job helping new shooters. If you gotta drive you gotta drive, but it's worth the trip. Some of our regular shooters drive from Chillicothe and some come from out of state.
