Civil War Rifle

My wife's uncle has a rifle that his family ancestor used in the civil war. It still has the bayonnett and is in good condition. The only markings on it are near the trigger. There is written:
"Liege
F & T
1861"
I know this is very little info, but if anyone has any knowledge of this brand or type of gun, we would greatly appreciate any additional info. Thank you very much for your time.
 
It sounds as if it is one of the many thousands of rifles that were imported from Europe by both sides during the war.

Liege was the gunmaking center in Belgium, F&T is likely the manufacturer of either the gun or the specific component.

Other than that, I can't give you anything.
