Chucky Lives!! (a rifle restored)

A few months ago I posted a photo of a group I shot with my dad's Mossberg Chuckster 640KD .22 Magnum, open sights. I have been working on it off and on since then. I was unhappy back in March with the bluing job I had done, so I stripped it back down and blued it again. This weekend, I finished getting the stock refinished. It was in such bad shape just a few months ago, rusted, pitted, stock was cracked (courtesy my brother-in-law), dinged, scratched... and just plain tired. I feel pretty darn good about the way she looks now after the po-boy budget restoration. Only took about 12 hours.. :) I still wish I could have got the bluing a little darker, but after a while it just stopped taking color. Not sure what that was all about, but it's better than Iron Oxide Red.

I added a Simmons 3-9x32 .22 scope on some BKL offset rings. This is about as good as I get at a rifle glamour shot:

Looks like you did a great job and now have a rifle anyone would be proud to own. Except for the Simmons scope. I've never owned one that would hold it's zero let alone be repeatable after adjustment.

I've always wonder why quality gun makers put them on their rifle packages, in the end it make the rifle appear to be **** when its the scope.

Try a Burris or bushnell and I bet you'll really be pleased how acurate that rifle is.

True.. but then again, my budget of $0 made the Simmons a bargain!:D

Taylorce1,
I used a birchwood-casey kit. I suppose someday I can take it somewhere to get it done right; dip tank, etc.

You did one heck of a job the gun looks great.

FALshootist I have a savage model 10 .270 wsm with a simmons scope that came with, I zeroed it about four years ago when I bought it and have never had to adjust the zero. I can and have shot moa groups at 100 yards with a few I could cover with a dime and that is with factory 130 grain federal power shok.

Nice Chuckster

:)Aren't they a pain in the neck to mount a Scope on ? What Rings did you use ? I have one that I have killed Beef , Hogs and all kinds of vermin with , no Scope on it !

That is a rich looking wood grain.

Walnut with 3 applications of light Walnut Danish oil, followed by 3 coats of Minwax High Gloss PolyUrethane. Leftovers from my other hobby. :D

I found these BKL offset rings from a post in a different forum. I have to say that I was ecstatic to find such a thing; was able to drift the scope back enough for proper eye relief.

I took the rifle out this evening after work to see what it would do; to my surprise, it put down a 3/4" group at 50 yards using CCI 30gr V-Max Varmint (poly tip). Best part: After I was done, I could have slapped myself. Realized I was shooting with the scope set at 4x the entire time. I've gotten so used to shooting my .308 with the fixed power, I didn't even think to adjust it up. Never the less, I can kill a golf ball; very pleased with it.

I did make an odd observation however; a problem to which I haven't a solution. The back of the brass is ballooning out.

2 fired left, 2 unfired right

I don't guess it's hurting anything; doesn't seem to have effected the accuracy much if at all. The bolt isn't seating fully against the breech face? If anything, I may be able to shim between the bolt handle and the receiving boss on the bolt; that's the only thing I can think of.

Aside from that, thanks for the comments guys!

That brings back memories of a Mossberg single-shot .22 WMR I bought around 1962, but sold it, like a lot of guns I bought back then.

Thanks!
