Chuck Connor's rifle scotchtaped together?

Was watching The Rifleman. Lucas and Mark McCain are riding a train with an old woman, played by Bewitcheds' Agnes Moorehead. She claims to be a bounty hunter. She asks to see Lucas' rifle. There seems to be 2-3" wide clear tape covering a crack. I might understand if this was a prop rifle, but I think the gun was later used in a shooting sequence.

Anybody ever noticed this?
 
There were probably both, props and shooters, in the show.
Props for some scenes and shooters for others.
With no computer graphics to help, some of the guns had to shoot blanks, at least.
Others just had to look the part.
Like closeup scenes with actors atop fake horses and longer ones with real horses.
It's just tv.
 
I dunno... Scotch tape and baling wire have been around for a loooonnnggg time! Maybe Lucas' general store had it on sale that week. Could have been his "bumpfire" trigger V1.0 :D
