Chronographing the 638, Hydrashok vs. DPX

I will be carrying the Corbon DPX from here until something better comes along. The Corbon loads were 160 fps faster than the Federal, and I also like the shape of the DPX bullets, as they help facilitate loading with a speed loader. I did not test them for accuracy yet, as this is not a parameter that is as important with a pocket pistol and its limited range of normal use. The primary role is self defense where reliability rules without question. Stopping power is next in importance, and that function depends on the shooter as much as the power stats of the round.

I like the Speer 135 gr. +P Gold Dots for Short Barrels from my 637 but in practically every test I've seen, DPX produces good results in ballistic gel.

Here are some pics I took a year or two ago. The rounds were fired into our swimming pool (wife not home!!). Water is not the perfect medium for testing I know, but does give a good comparison for each bullet side by side. The velocities shown were the average of five through my chronograph. As a result of this test and an accuracy check, my wife and I carry with Remington Golden Sabers. Rod

Water is not the perfect medium

No it isn't. The faster the round goes the more the water resists, thus a better mushroom with less penetration. But, and these always is a but in life, it does show how the bullets held up from the same medium! :D

PS>> Good thing the wife as not at home ... especially in the pool!!!

As for actual performance the DPX is a winner . That's a test much better than water, ballistic gel etc. With my 44mag it has done the job well on woodchucks to deer .Deer to 250 lbs !! So I hunt and carry DPX And most things I get are one shot kills.Don't worry about velocity.

Underwood is a small manufacturer specializing in "hot" loads. I've shot some of their 10mm ammo and it is good stuff.
