chopping up a 25-5...

I have the opportunity to pick up a S&W M25-5 in .45LC. It's very clean. It's also VERY hard to find in California. I've been wanting a M25 or M625 for a long long time, but don't want a new one and want either a 4" or 5" barrel.

This 25-5 has an 8 3/8" barrel. Am I committing heresy if I have the gun rebarreled? I just don't see anyway around the lack of available 25 or 625's here in the PRK...

Man, I would hate to see you cut the barrel. I wonder if you could find another barrel somewhere ? I am sure it would not be easy. I managed to find one for my Model 27, but it took a few phone calls. Maybe buy the gun and try to enjoy it and in the mean time explore your options.

Rather then cut the barrel I'd contact Smith $ Wesson and see if it couldn't be rebarreled. They'd return the old one if you requested it. The cost of cutting the present barrel, remounting the front sight and refinishing might come close to the cost of a new barrel. If you do decide to have the barrel cut I'd return it to the factory to have the work done. After all you went through to find a 25-5 now is not the time to mess it up.

I agree

I agree, before I would cut it, I would exhaust resources finding a shorter tube.

I hate to have to do any of this, but I don't know what else I can do based on the PRK gun laws.

Clearly, buy the gun.

Then you can work on what to do with it... either shortening/crowning/reblue (which could be $150+) or by locating a shorter bbl. Gunparts, custom makers with takeoffs, etc, are the places I check for extras.

Good find. I recall you've been looking for some time, and you'll beat the Jan. 1 deadline! :D

I needed a Model 27 barrel (6") about a year ago. I called Smith and they told me that they no longer stock parts for the older blued revolvers. They advised me to call two places, one was Numrich and I don't remember the other. Numrich didn't have it. The other place didn't either but they said they do get them in occasionally and they would call me back. I am still waiting. I got on the American Pistolsmith Guild website and called everyone who specialized in S&W revolvers. No dice. Finally I called the gunsmith I have been going to for years in Carson City NV and he had one sitting right in front of him. I lucked out. I still wasn't happy with it after the new barrel so I sent it to the Smith Performance Center and everything is once again rosy. I hope you have an easier time of it than I.

I say cut it to suit yourself. I have added new barrels, cut old ones and about everything else to have a gun fit me as I would like. They are just metal.

Cut away. I have two blue 8-3/8 inch 25s -- one is going to get cut down a bit. Be sure to keep us in the loop on this project. I'm interested on what you do and where you have it done.

Argh!

It's not going to happen. There was some miscommunication with the seller. It's not a consignment gun, so it's not PRK approved for a PPT...

He does have a .455 Colt New Service converted to .45LC that I will look at, but my quest for a .45 N frame continues... :(

I have a friend that has a 5" barrel for a .45 Colt that was removed from his brother's Smith and Wesson several years ago. I believe it's in excellent condition. Send me a "PM" and I'll check it out for you if you're interested
