Choosing an Optic

Why does one use the "Tube" style Optic as opposed to the "L" shape optic?
For example, why choose the Ultardot "Matchdot" (tube style) as opposed to the Matchdot "Utra LT" ( what I called "L" style for lack of a better description) ?
Thanks
PS: for mounting on a S&W model 41 .22LR for use mostly in Bullseye Shooting but not exclusively Bullseye ... also used for "fun plimking".
Wiull be Indoors 6 mos of the year for Bullseye and Outdoors the other 6 mos

Not sure I understand the question, are you talking about red dots or scopes?? I use a L shaped red dot (BSA) on my Neos 22LR works fine for me, but others may like a tube red dot on theirs. Personal choice.

I use the tube-style on all my Bullseye guns.

I've read somewhere that the tube-style helps your aiming eye focus on the dot + target while your non-aiming eye sees only the side of the tube (and not the dot). For Bullseye this is fine, and even desirable. For a more action-oriented discipline (involving both hands), the "reflex" or tube-less red-dots are better since you can focus both eyes on one target and bring the sight up into one of their lines of sight and superimpose the dot on the target in your vision.
