Choosing a AK 47

Are there any good AK's for between 300-400 if so I would appreciate recomendations. Would rather have 7.62X39.

I'm thinking of going with a Saiga myself. If you want you could save up and convert it later if money is an issue. At 300.00 you can't beat the Saiga, IMHO.

anymore just about the only ak you're going to find for that price is going to be a polish tantal or a used wasr or akm... the days of the cheap AK are well and truly over bud

This..

If you didn't want the trouble of converting it, you could get a WASR-10 around your price range, but I would not order one offline.

Wasr's to get a decent one are very dependent on how well (or how terrible) they ground out the mag well when it was converted. Some are nice and tight and are good shooters, others the mag flops around and causes feeding problems. If you want a WASR I would highly recommend buying it locally so you can inspect it first.

Saiga on the other hand are what Arensal's are born from, and are made in the same factory as the Russian military AK variants. They are the closest you will come to a real Russian made AK. Converting them isn't all that difficult to save the money.

AK's

I bought a WASR 10 (double stack) a few weeks ago from Dunham's sporting goods for $400. including 2 30 round mags. I must say, after reading all the gloom and doom about WASR's, I am very well pleased with my latest firearm aquisition.
The chrome bore looks amazing with the reflection of a bore light, the Tapco trigger is about as smooth as silk. No jamming or failure of any kind. The furniture is a little coarse, but certainly acceptable given the price of the gun. A few little pits in the wood don't seem to affect the overall look and performance of the gun.
One of the mags that came with it would jam when trying to load the ammo in. I took it apart and couldn't find any visible problem so I took the offending mag back to the store where they swapped it out for another one without much ado.
They used to offer the WASR's on sale for $350.ish, about a year ago. They are normally in the $5oo. range and I was patiently waiting for another sale. When they advertized them at $400. a few weeks ago, it was time to buy. The most recent sale price I saw was $450.,a bit out of your stated price range. They run sales on certain firearms about every week and they're good for Sun. and Mon. only.
They also run sales on 7.62 ammo. I usually stock up at that time.
I'm sure the higher end AK's are fine guns, but for me, the WASR is just great.

I own a arsenal SGL21 and a Romanian GP WASR 10/63, and to be honest my WASR is about just as good as my arsenal.

If you buy an arsenal product your pretty much golden from the get go, if you buy a WASR there are some things to look out for:

canted sights
canted gas block
mag wobble
poorly milled mag well
stock wobble
and just general wear and tear on the weapon

Theres a few good vids on youtube to help you catch the flaws. Luckily mine checked out completely and Ive had no problems with it, and it only cost me 350 +tax. My arsenal cost 750 +tax, but dont let that sway you from a serious quality AK. The fit and finish on the SGLs are superb and its about the highest quality AK you can get before jumping up to $2000+ only for a milled reciever.
