Marlin XT17 VR

Savage 93R17 FV

Originally I was looking to get a .22LR plinker but got a chance to shoot the .17HMR my neighbor had and fell in love with the little caliber. Since I own a bunch of .22LR's, it made no sense to gat another one. Which of these two rifles are the best?

Since the majority of my shooting with this will be fun gunning from the bench, I like the beavertail on the Marlin's stock but have read reviews that say the Savage is more accurate. From looking there is only about $40.00 difference in the price of the two guns and both actions look very similar.

What do you own and reccommend?

My wife and I have a pair of the Savages and she sometimes lets me win when we shoot paint balls off golf tees at 100 yards. Don't know about the Marlin but I'd buy the Savages again.

Thanks, I keep going back to the Savage. I know I want the HB option but the traditionalist in me likes the wood stock so I'm looking at that as well. There's only $15.00 difference in the wood and tupperware stock and owning two Model 10's, Savage's plastic stocks aren't all that great.

i dont think you would be dissapointed in either my dad has the marlin and i have a savage in 22lr both of the guns are great

I have a Savage 93 17 rimfire and I like it. It has a heavy barrel and I think the number you refer to does also. Good for shooting from the bench. I also have a Marlin in .22 HRM and I like it also, but I think the method of holding the action in the stock is better in the Savage, and that is important. Opinion time: The 17 is very accurate and fun to shoot targets and groups, but it doesn't throw enough pill for general varmint hunting.

I don't know what you consider "general" varmint hunting, but my Savage 93R17 BTVS launching 17grn. V-Max's tears gophers in half at 100 yds.....:D

Yup, "General" is too imprecise. I'm thinking of ground squirrels, prairie dogs, racoons, ground hogs, foxes, maybe an occasional coyote.

Looked at the Marlin yesterday and the Savage today. Definitely going with the Savage. The trigger seems to be much better, crisper and less creep, the stock was nicer and the action seemed to be more polished. For the little price difference, the Savage just seems to be a much better buy for the dollar.

Enjoy you're new gun. Personally, I handled both around Christmas and found both lacking compared to the rimfires of just a few years ago.
