Chokes, full vs super full vs turkey?

Out of a 12 gauge Mossberg 500,what would you expect for a pattern size at 35-40 yards using turkey appropriate shot (which is?)? Does anyone know of a website where this kind of info is available?

take a big piece of paper out to the distance you expect to shoot at. all guns , ammo and chokes are going to vary

Yes ! the choke designation is only a general guide. You must test pattern each gun/ammo/choke combination. For example comparing lead vs hardened lead vs plated lead vs buffered shot - all will pattern differently.

Absolutely concur with the above.

But having said that, my Mossberg Turkey gun with super full is clearly an order of magnitude in "tightness" over regular full choke. Can't remember any measurements (if I took any), but it was obvious. I think you'd want superfull, regardless of your load or range (but personal results may vary) :D

I guess I was figuring that there must be a general rule somewhere governing pattern sizes out of a given choke at a standard range. It would seem to me that choke manufacturers would have some benchmark to work with.

For turkey, a better benchmark or standard would be to use a turkey head and neck target. I trace around my fist and wrist set upright on the paper, it makes a good silohuette. Put the paper up at the max distance you think you'll get a shot. 40 yards is a good start.

Pick the choke and load that puts the max number of pellets in the head and neck. Shoot at least three of each and average them out.
