Chokes and Loads

I just picked up an FN Police with an 18" barrel. It came with an IC and a Modified choke. I will be using this gun for HD and informal clay pigeon "plinking". I may eventually press it into service for deer hunting and/or pheasant. Should I consider a rifled choke tube with sabot slugs for deer? What's a good choke for what? What loads go well with what chokes? My last shotgun was a Maverick that only came with one choke, so I don't even know what it was because I never removed it.

I would suggest a barrel of about 26" to 28" with choke tubes for pheasant and clays - use the Modified or Imp. Mod. choke for birds and the IC for clays.

The 18" barrel with the IC choke will work fine with buckshot for HD and non-saboted slugs for deer.

If you want to use saboted slugs you'll need either an extended rifled choke tube for the 18" barrel or a rifled slug barrel.

The tube in your Maverick was a Modified - I know from experience. ;)
