Choke questions

I plan on doing some bird hunting this fall (pheasant and turkey), i own a mossberg 500 12 ga with a 28 in mod choke barrel. the choke is not removable, is it this way in all mossberg 500's? can i hunt with this effectivley? do they make barrels with screw out chokes for my gun? i also have a 18in cylander bore barrel for it, will that work better?

if they do make a good barrel that would work better any info on that would be appreciated.

That choke will hunt pretty well. You will likely find it a tad loose for big birds, a barrel swap is in order to really capitalize. Dedicated turkey chokes are really doin' a number on them. You can buy a barrel that has different choke or one that has removable chokes. hundred bucks should get any barrel you want with change to spare.

Barrel length depends on your needs. I have a 28 on a 12 gauge and an 18 on my 20 gauge. That 28 feels a goose gun and would never be my go to gun for heavy cover. I am satisfied with the offerings from Mossberg for all my 500 needs. Barrel, chokes and such. Not for any reason other than they are decent goods for a fair price and I know they will fit.
They do have a decent selection of chokes. For turkey loads I would buy whatever heavy 3 inch turkey loads are affordable at walmart. Any decent #6 for ringtail birds. With the 500 you have the option of 3 inch on pheasent too but I don't know if it is worth it. I personally haven't hunted turkey much and never really set up for a real hunt. I have never chambered a 3 inch in my 20 or 12 but will if I hear gobblers this season.

Yes, spare barrels for the 500 are..

sold by Mossberg. May want to try gunbroker also, I just got a 24" choked tube barrel for $65 beginning of month, have a 18" with tubs for turkey hunting and shotgun matches that use buck shot at targets. You can use that for close upland game grouse and quail.

look also at the carlson's chokes and Briley for converting you present barrel to tube, but they will be specific items not the over the counter types.

Yes, there are AM barrels for your 500, but a local gunsmith threaded my Mossy barrel for a very reasonable price.

IIRC it was $55 dollars (8 or 10 years ago) which included a modified tube. He didn't have a Mossy modified tube on hand so he gave me an aftermarket stainless one for the same price. Since then I've purchased imp. cyl. and full chokes.
I've got an 18" CB barrel too and always thought it'd be neat to get that done as well, but no regrets on getting the 28 incher done first.

Ask away. Glad too help, as are others.
