Choke for slugs

I have a mossberg 535 and want to shoot rifled slugs out of it. What choke do I need? I realize it cant be a turkey choke. I have a modified but do I need a imp. Cy. instead?
 
I have a full choke that shoots terrible and an improved choke that shoots wonderful. That's about all the help I can give you.
 
Never ever use a choke smaller than a modified, it will shave the lead of the slug or ruin the choke. try finding a Rifled extended choke, the are the correct size and are rifled and great increase the accuracy and range of the slug.
 
Shooting slugs causes aweful leading, it takes forever to clean them out. I had great luck with a SK choke in my benelli. I made a cloverleaf at 25yards with some 3" Winchester 1760fps 1oz slugs.
 
If you can obtain a rifled choke you can shoot saboted slugs with far greater accuracy and longer range, but that's not necessary at usual defense ranges. if shooting rifled slugs from a smoothbore, a cylinder choke is best, skeet second best, improved third since that's the progression towards tighter choke.

As to point of aim with slugs from a smoothbore, standard shotguns have a slightly high "line of fire" because a game bird will normally be rising. But it's not of great consequence at usual defensive ranges.

If you expect engagement at distance and HAVE to rely on a shotgun, a rifled choke and sights would be advised. But, would be better to switch to an AR or other rifle, i.e. use the right tool for the job....
 
Nothing to worry about at the gun's effective range, aimed at ceter of mass. Lots of bird guns (smoothbores) take lots of deer every year out to 50 yards or even more without any compensation in aim point.

But you should see for yourself, practice and knowledge can never be overdone. Remember, it's RIFLED slugs from smoothbores. They're pretty cheap, stock up and give the gun a workout! I'd suggest 2-3/4" rather than 3", less recoil (which you'll learn to appreciate if doing much shooting without shoulder protection) and at least as effective.
 
Open chokes usually work better with slugs. Some shotguns impact slugs well away from the center of shot patterns, so you MUST try out some slugs to see how they group from YOUR barrel and which shoots tightest for you.

Buy some 5 packs of divers RIFLED slugs and Brenekkes. Shoot 3 shot groups until a clear winner emerges, then buy lots of that.

So to shoot regular "rifled" slugs, you wouldn't really want a rifled choke tube.

The regular old fashioned slugs were safe in any choke up to and including full.

I never suffer "leading" I notice with the occasional use of slugs in my 500.

If you are really concerned about accuracy, perhaps you should consider installing temporary adjustable rifle sights for your slug work.

You do NOT use a rifled choke with rifled slugs, you use that with sabot slugs. An IC will work - any choke will work - you need to shoot and see what your groups are like in your gun
 
Zippy13, that is a really great idea you got, i might consider that if I decide to use slugs. I am new to slugs and actually haven't shot them enough to pattern them in any of my shotguns.
 
Secondly, for the clown above me, I never said to use rifled chokes with a rifled shoke tube. It won't hurt anything, just counter productive.

Did you not read the link I posted. The same question was submitted to expert. Not some clown thats on the firing line going to get some one hurt. I been a gunsmith for 8 years, and I have seen Mossberg 500s with threaded chokes come in that have bulged barrels were some clown off the firing line shot a rifled choke through a full choke barrel. Had to cut 3 inches of the barrel, and give the guy a bandaid because a piece of the barrel hit him in the forehead.
Heres what happened to a guy on trapshooters.com when he shot a rifle slug through a full choked barrel.
