Choice to make...

I need a bolt action hunter, probably 30-06, but not set on it.

1. Steyr Mannlicher Classic full stock in 30-06 (iron sights, yeah)
2. Winchester Model 70 pre-64 30-06 (1950's, iron sights yeah, engraved yuck)
3. New Winchester Model 70 30-06 super grade (no irons)
4. Steyr SSG69 P2 .308 (no irons, no scope, 30mm rings)

The SSG is the wild card. Every one I have shot has been an ungodly accurate rifle. The plastic stock flexes with hand pressure to tough the barrel. The action is very smooth, no cracks in the trigger/magazine housing or magazine. Perfect condition.

The Steyr Mannlicher is really nice, smooth, and well built. I love the way it looks.

The old Model 70 is a classic, but probably not as good as a new FN model 70. I like the Mauser style action. The new model 70 is the safe choice.

Thoughts?

Mannlicher

You can't go wrong with a Mannlicher in my opinion. My dad had one he bought in Germany when we were over there in his Air Force days (I way like 4 years old). I would have loved to have that one but sadly it had to be sold and at the time it would have been only an heirloom to me because it was about a year before I rekindled my love of all things gun powder.

Anyway, my memory of that rifle are that it was a very smooth shot. Even with dad's extra heavy hand made loads the recoil was managable. It was dead on accurate providing the shooter was doing his job and it was a damn pretty piece of craftsmanship to boot.

I vote for either of the Winchesters'. I guess if your eyes are up to the iron sights, the pre 64 would be my pick. My eyes have gotten too old for iron sights, so for me it would probably be the post 64. In fact I have a model 70 in 243 win. which was manufactured 94-95 and really like it.

Irons

My eyes are not what they used to be. No way I'd risk wounding an animal with irons, but I like the idea of having them as a backup. I can shoot irons at the range OK. It is not a deal breaker.
