choice of front ramp inserts

please delete

While my 442 is being hard chromed I figured for an extra 10 bucks I will get a colored ramp....what color do you all recommend? Red is standard, they have orange and green and even black...black would look cool on a matte chrome gun but not sure what advantage it would give me...probably geat in daylight but not sure about low light....such decisions...

If it is only $10, I'd go with orange.

I paid a fair bit of money ($60 IIRC) to have a gunsmith put in an orange ramp insert on my 642. I wouldn't (and have not) done it again. My procedure now is to use some orange paint. If it wears off, I simply paint it again. Total cost: a couple bucks at a hobby store.

I prefer the red ramp on my longer barrel Smith
& Wesson target revolver's. Its easy for these
old eyes to see! :D :) Or maybe its what
I'm use to?

I'm leaning towards black....for daytime and target it would stand out nicely and at night, I'm not sure I would even see the red, black or orange anyway....in a defensive situation, I don't think I'd have time to line up a snubbie sight picture anyway...

When I was trying to decide between the Green and Red fiber optic tubes for a Glock 29 I was putting together as an "outdoors" pistol, I talked at length with the gunsmith/sight maker at Aero-Tek.

He told me that, in his experience, the green FO's were the best choice for indoors, and that the red ones were easier to spot outdoors. I know fiber optic is not the same as the inserts you're talking about, but wouldn't the colors work similarly? Of course, orange was not an option, but I can say that my father uses flourescent orange acrylic spray paint to make the front sights on several of his guns stand out. He sprays it on a piece of cardboard and then uses a brush to paint it on.

Just me, but I'm kinda thinking black is $10 to make it look just like it did when it was blued... did you want inserts back then?

Oh yeah....

Thanks for giving me my first cosmetic upgrade to start the "wish list" on my 642, after only 2 hours of ownership! :D

When my gun was black I was thinking of red or orange...but now that the gun is matte chrome, most bright colors seem diffused....I have a red ramp on my stainless model 60 and it is not that easy to pick up...I think black through a chrome rear would be the best option....

On my stainless S&W revolvers, I remove the red insert, put in a black insert, then put a shallow oval-shaped hole in it. I fill the oval hole with white paint. From the rear this looks like a round white dot.
I then have a white dot front that shows up very well in bad light.

I find orange to be the most useful for me.

Yellow is second and looks best in a blued gun. A bright baby blue would probably look best in a silver gun, but thinking again, - I get inserts for function, not looks.

I only own orange ramps, painted and inserts.

Just a reminder that if you get second guessing yourself it's not really a bid deal. I paint all my S/W front sights insert or not. Black for target, blaze orange for defense.

Just touched up my model 19 with the exact same color as the ramp. Sounds weird to do that but the red of S/W "Red ramp" sights does not go all the way to the top and I've found my self sometimes aiming at the top of the color and sometimes at the tiny strip of black on top of that making for different aiming points. Somtimes the bright color also makes that little black strip seem to disapear in certain lighting conditions.

With paint or nail polish I can have the "color" go ALL the way to the top of the sight. Works for me anyway.

Best, Blueduck

And if it wears off or you don't like the color, you can just do it again. Works for me too.
