Well, what can I say Im a sucker for mil surp rifles, and so I recently acquired a type 53 carbine. Stock is more beat up then my 91/30 was but its not terrible. The receiver, barrel and all the metal parts are pristine. the only thing that concerns me is the rear receiver screw ( under the bolt) is missing. Do you think its safe that way or should I acquire a spare screw and install it?

thanks

get a new one. mosins are only held in place by 3 things, the stock rings(which do little more than hold that handguard to the stock and two receiver screws, without the rear screw you stand a pretty good chance of ruining your stock or even being injured.

what you ended up with is a century U-fix-em. the advertize as 'may need parts' and even say that they may come without bolts, bayonets, cleaning rods, and small parts. I'd say you probably came away lucky that that's all your gun is missing. numrich arms is your best bet for a screw.
