chief' special

I inherited a Chief's special that had a chipped hammer and was looking to have it replaced with new one. But S&W said that they didn't have one. I have to look for one somewhere. I did have it rounded up a bit at a good shop and I hope it works okay.

It all depends on the age/engineering change as to whether S&W will still have parts for it or not.

Some parts are not a drop in across engineering changes.

S & W already said they don't have any more. I will have to keep looking for a good one.

Another question is can one shoot 38 Spl + P shells in the chief's special or are they too powerful? I accidently purchased a box of these shells and was wondering if it will damage the gun and also be hard to hold while shooting it?

The Chief and for (obvious reasons I include all variations of the 2 1/2" "J: Frame, OK?), fit onto a nitche that has always had a need! Almost not noticable due to their small size and body conforming fit. They shoot a relativelly heavy (for the bore) 158 gr bullet at good velocities and much higher preformance possible with todays 125 gr high preformance loads!
' As it sits on it's Factory loaded 158 gr RNFPCast Kead bbllets seem to give a lively preformance both in muzzle report but also in full power recoil!
Police who chose new factory ammo were not undergunned one bit.
I have found a Home with my .38/357 and straight .38 specials!
I really like the guns that fire them and the loass themselves!

Is the chip off the hammer spur?
If so, an alternative would be to grind it off smooth and shoot the gun DAO.
If it is off the side or face of the hammer and affects hammer nose (firing pin) support, it should be replaced.

One box of +P is not going to wear out a modern Smith & Wesson.

Yeah, providing nothing has been done to the mainspring, a common Bubba mod is/was to saw off the hammer spur on M36's, reducing the chance of a snag in pocket carry/draw. Pretty common mod. All I've ever seen done this way shot fine.

I did have the back of the hammer ground off at a good gun shop and it shot good. I have to get used to the kick and I after shooting almost a box I became better hitting the bullseye.
When I said I had it ground off it was only to get it smooth and not the whole spur. The 36 is a joy to carry and with more practice I should get better at shooting it in double action mode.
