Chicago Area TFL Shoot - Need ideas on when/where

There was a significant interest in a TFL get-together/shoot for those of us in the Chicago metro area (and beyond). I would like to get some ideas on where we could hold this gathering and what date(s?) would be good.

Where?
Many people(me included) agree that IL is not the ideal location for the shoot. IN is MUCH more gun-friendly and has many public shooting ranges. Willow Slough and Jasper Pulaski St. Fish&Wildlife Preserves come to mind. Indiana TFL members, any more suggestions?

When?

I think we can rule out Mothers Day due to the counter march to the MMM.

Memorial day would be good, but I'll be out of town and not be able to attend.

Another issue is that some of us are in school and are not free until this summer. We don't want to leave some people out because they have a final exam the next Monday.

Daylight savings begins on April 6. The more shootin' time, the better. :)

Any other suggestions welcome.

jcoyoung,
Indiana doesn't have daylight savings time. The bars and the drive-ins got it blocked back when it first came out, and nobody really seems to mind. It does get kinda confusing when your trying to figure out when the race is on, but other than that it's not a big deal.

I'm all for a IL/IN TFL get together, but I'm down in Indy, and I don't know where good ranges are up in the NW corner. I'm not sure if all the DNR ranges are set up the same, but the one down here only has 25, 50 and 100 yd ranges, and no mid-range targets, so they're a bit long for handguns.

Teach a kid to shoot. It annoys the antis.

There's a rifle range in Ottawa (west of Chicago) called "Buffalo Rock", and one in Bristol, Wisconsin (north of Chicago).
There's also an ISRA range in Kankakee (south of Chicago), but you have to be an ISRA member and pay an annual fee to use their range facilities.

I'm not sure about ranges in IN but I do know a few people there, I could try and get some information on that. As for IL, I know of two ranges on the NW side, one is in bensenville called Gun World......and the other one is either in Des Plaines or Mount Prospect, and I keep forgetting the name of it :D. If you want, email me and we can see what we can set up MissD@acmecity.com Please do keep in mind I am a newbie :( I am going to need lots of help :D LOL I can shoot thats about it :D

The gun range in Bristol WI allows you to only load one round at a time, does'nt matter what type of gun you are shooting.

There is a real nice range in Eagle WI, about 1 hour to the west of Bristol, They have nice covered shooting lanes, 100, 50 and 25 yards and a trap or sheet range(not sure which, I do not use them).

I believe that the name of the range is McMillers and as far as I know, it is probobly the best one in ths area. Living in the Chicago area is a drag when youn are looking for a rifle range.

If you are interested in a indoor range, there is a nice one in Winthrup Harbor, IL Just south of the WI state line near Lake Michigan (Sheridan Rd.) called The Outdoorsman.

I would like to have this at a public outdoor range for minimum fuss with membership and cost. I would also like to do rifle, pistol, and shotgun for a more 'rounded' out day of shooting. My friend and I have an Outers pigeon thrower that we will bring in case some of us want to bust some birds.
Loading 1 shot at a time sounds pretty lame, so Bristol is out.

For suitable outdoor ranges, I currently have:

McMiller Sports, Eagle, WI

Buffalo Rock, Ottawa, IL

Willow Slough State Fish & Wildlife Preserve, Indiana

Jasper-Pulaski State Fish & Wildlife Preserve, Indiana

I have a co-worker that goes the the Jasper-Pulaski range quite a bit, I'll ask him more about it. (You out there Murph?)
I've also heard good things about Willow Slough and Buffalo Creek.

As for a date, I'm kind of thinking April 29 or May 6. Any other date suggestions are welcome.

Hey, I don't consider myself Chicago area, except 1) I have been working in prospect heights for the last 2 months, and
2) I live about 15 miles from McMiller Sportsmans Range.
If you decide to come on up (and directions are easy, 12 north to 67 north, there is a road sign on 67 telling you when to turn....)
I need enough lead time to arrange for the daughter (8 months is a little young to find ear protection... but she LOVES going to the gunshows!) but I would be glad to go to a shoot.
McMiller does have a trap range, it has 4 or 5 throwers IIRC,
and we are quicklypassing the time when we could be shut out by skiers....
Of the places i have paid to shoot at I personally like McMiller the best. They have a $5 for 1 hour on a range, or $8 all day all ranges.... :D Guess what i prefer????)
Whoever coordinates, please send me an e-mail. Thanks,
Gfrey
