Chevy vs Ford vs...Ferrari?

Alright, I've read all these 870 vs 500 posts until my eyes are crossed. Not trying to start another one here.

For putzing around at the range and possibly home defense, I've narrowed it down to the Mossberg 500 20ga, Rem 870 Youth 20ga or possibly the Benelli Nova 20ga, all hopefully in a 22 inch or less barrel. Other smaller people might be using this on the range too.

Thoughts?

Welcome to TFL!

I'd suggest doing a Search under Dave Mc, for starters. There are other members as well - you'll pick up on whom they are .

For a new shooter I always recommend "try before you buy" , GUN FIT is that important IMO. I also highly recommend proper instructions and training - these also make evident what gun is best for YOU for the intended tasks.

I also harp on folks getting an older publication that addresses many questions we see here on the forums.

Shotgunning: The Art And The Science - Bob Brister.

Bear in mind that the Benelli, fine gun that it is, does not allow any modification to the stock. This may become important later on. Shortening stocks and adding recoil pads, and adjusting cast are easy with Rem/moss but not possible with the nova.

Small folk and fashionably thin females often need modifications to shoot comfortably. The Rem & Moss can be modified easily. You can even have several stocks to accomodate everyone.

I figured as much. Apparently some shock absorbing butt pads can be added to the Benelli, but I figure a 20ga should be alright in the recoil department. It even felt great just with the 13" LOP compared to the 12ga.

Held one today...again...and oh man does it feel nice. The $300 price tag is a little hard to swallow right now, but boy oh boy.
