Chertoff and Russert on the morning news shows

Having seen/heard the Tim Russert interview with Judge Michael Chertoff, currently head at Dept. of Homeland Security, one was given to recall that famous Clintonesque offering of "it depends on what the meaning if is is".

Judge Chertoff allowed that while there were certainly problems, that now was not the time for finger pointing or for blame laying or for the placing of blame. Looking at who failed could be taken care of later, later being some conveniently unspecified point in time.

While there is some sense in what the gentleman had to say, I beg to differ with him regarding the placing of blame, which is something that must be done concurrently with whatever efforts are bent toward fixing things, lest blame become something swept under that all to convenient, and always available carpet. If, based on past performances, it isn't done now, or damned soon, it will NEVER be done, and the same "boobus bureaucratus" who screwed the pooch in a manner that led to what we see before us, the hurricane NOT included for that was an act of god, will likely remain in the seats of power they so undeservedly occupied, and will screw the poor pooch again.

Whatever action might prove necessary to see that those responsible for the bungling, for the screw-ups, never occupy any position of either authority or public trust again, must be taken and sooner is ever so much better than later. By the way, I do not make reference to the offering up of that all to convenient sacrificial lamb. Retribution must be carried to the top of The Food Chain regarding this debacle.

I saw that interview. Was astounded that Russert let that imbecile parrish president get away with dodging the question about the culpability of the Mayor of NO and the Governor of LA. Instead of answering the question, the guy had a nervous breakdown and blathered on about the poor woman in the nursing home. Seems to me that the fault regarding the poor woman who was left in the nursing home belonged to her family members and local authorities who didn't evacuate her prior to the storm.

Also seems to me that the mayor and governor could have obeyed the President's request that a MANDATORY evacuation be carried out. What exactly did they not understand about MANDATORY? Couldn't the same buses and vans that are used to haul those poor inner-city souls to the polls to vote for those LA politicians have been used to haul them out of NO?

How could voters be so stupid an uninformed as to hire a cable guy as mayor of such a national landmark?

Would the mayor and governor have the nation believe that the lesson learned in this disaster is that the federal government should declare martial law and depose the local governments BEFORE a disaster happens, as OBVIOUSLY the the locals just "don't get it?"
