Cannot speak to the brake cleaner or wd-40, but when I cleaned my P95 and P97, I used Ed's Red which is equal parts of kerosene, acetone, paint thinner and automatic transmission fluid. Never any indication of problems with that mix.
I don't allow it to soak, just scrub it on with an old toothbrush and then wipe it off with a clean rag.
