Cheep Gun

ok, maybe it should be "inexpensive" gun..

I picked up FEG PPK/s clone NIB for less than $100, it needs some work, (trigger job.. my understanding is that DA's shouldn't have a 87 pound pull). some low light sight would be nice, better grips would be good..

I'm still looking for someone local who can do a trigger job that won't take 4 months turn around time, but is there anything I can do about better low light sights? I had it at the range last sat and couldn't even see the sights against the 10 ring in anything less than good light.

does anyone make a "do it yourself" kit for that kind of thing. needless to say I'm not into putting a LOT of money into this otherwise very nice gun.

recommendations on inexpensive grips would be appreciated as well

Inexpensive is kinda ambiguous. I would say though that one of the best deals out there right now is the cz 75. Great value, great performance and less than $400. Honestly cheaper than that & I'd worry about realibility & build quality ;)

Nanaimo Barr,
which FEG is it? All that I have shot have the same trigger...d/a
trigger SUCKS..but gets much better with break in..the s/a pull
on the guns I have shot are very nice. Give it some time and you may like it. They really are pretty good guns. shoot well
Oh ya...I dont know anywhere you can get grips for an FEG...not a PA, SMC or PMK series. Which I suspect you have one of.

should have been more clear, SMC 380, (the PPK/s Clone that there now making for Walther) the SA is quite nice, accuracy is good to exellent. it's not a 1911 or any of the others, but it's what I can afford right now... my other carry option is a Ruger Blackhawk....(nuf said)

Unless the front and rear sights are dovetailed into the slide, there isn't an inexpensive way to get night sights for that gun. However, you may be able to use one of the fiber optic "light pipe" type kits that are on the market to get a better sight picture for about 20$.

I picked up a bottle of brite white nail polish and artfully painted my rear blade and the front site and I can now see them against the ten ring.

Four bucks for the slow drying good stuff from maybelline.

Blades...good idea. I have seen them at shops. They look very
beneficial. The dont make the drop ins for my guns...it looks like
you could just carefully drill your sight out and install it. I painted my front dot dayglow orange, but it still dissapears at indoor ranges.

Nanaimo Barr your smc is a good little gun. I dont know of any aftermarket grips for your gun..I played with one that had the finger rest filed off of it and I liked it better before.
Pearce grip makes a wrap around rubber dohickey with finger grooves in it that may work? It is a good carry size..very concealable. I would like a PMK..same as your just longer grips and 1 more rnd. Enjoy your gun and shoot well

Day Glow paint.. now there is an idea... I tried red nail polish... (glad it comes off easily), have to give the white polish a try too. I did see those rubber tuby thingy's for the PPK/s, but not sure if they would fit.. or even if there any good...

I can live with the grips, the DA pull and the sights are a harder to just live with.

thank you all for the tips... I'll let you know how they work out.

ooops

Maybe I should learn to read the while thread before posting a reply
I found a couple of good gunsmiths by just asking the guys at my favorite gunshop & the range I go to. Turn around time on my 1991 was 10 days and that was because he had a ton of other guns ahead of mine.
I don't like modifying inexpensive guns because you quickly hit that point of diminishing returns and it's just not worth it..ie, I once saw a Firestorm 380 w/ trijicon night sights, Pachmyr grips and a nice trigger job. Probably spent more on the work than the gun was worth!

Kermit...I do the same thing sometimes....I just hit edit asap.
LOL...anyway. I think its amazing what people do to their guns.
ME INCLUDED! Tweaking this and that... Some good things can
be done to guns that are very functional and done at reasonable
cost. Personally, I think the little FEG warrants some more attention than the factory gives them...good little gun.
Shoot well

I gotta agree with you on the FEG, I am very happy with it otherwise (it groups quite nicely and VERY concielable).. I spent some time this morning with a friend who did a little polishing here and there (amongst giving me a hard time about NOT carrying the Blackhawk heheh), trigger pull was almost 15 pounds.. now a much more managable 9 or so, gonna do some more work on it next week. we only have 2 smiths in the area, so there both 4 month backlogged. but yes.. FEG could spend a couple more minutes with a wheel or file...

Those FEG pistols are pretty good and have lots of potential, but do need a general working over, removal of burrs, smoothing up, etc.

Maybe I am thinking of another gun, but AFAIK, while that gun resembles a Walther PPK, no parts interchange and it is really a different gun altogether.

Jim

that is my understanding.. I'm hopeing mags will be easy to find.. although I have been told they are/are not compatable with PPK/s mags..

Nanaimo Barr..I believe your FEG has no compatible parts with the Walther. FEG has been making "military" sidearms for various countries in Europe and other places for a long time.

Its good you got the trigger worked out..but be careful not to do to much. If its gonna ge a carry gun..dont get the trigger too light! If you ever have to "use it" in a defensive situaton and
anyone know/finds out about your smith work..could be trouble.

I have heard of guns that have been "wet honed"..oil honed the parts and it smoothed things out nicely. Use restraint in modifying your gun...a little goes a long ways...

You can call KBI, the importer for FEG. KBI is also Charles Daly
for mags...they have good service (717)540-8518 and should
be very helpful.

Shoot well

For an inexpensive, but reliable SA there is nothing quite equal to the Makarov. It is as reliable as any SA regardless of price. Currently SOG indicates they have them. Price is about $109 for one gun, if I remember right, and $99 each for two or more. Triggers are not bad and get better with use. Power is slightly greater than the .380.

I think they are the greatest bargain around now.

thanks for the info Eric.. we did go light in the work, it's no hair trigger by any stretch (well, I'm sure DiFi would say so), but it is a LOT better than it was and the Decocker is MUCH smoother and a lot less effort to work (hence safter), I am about to go out and order 3 more mags, but I'll swing by CD and check them out..

I wouldn't mind a Markarev.. it's on the "to get" list....

I found 2 sets of grips, one by Buttler Creek (Uncle Mike) one by Houge (there both the slip on type), I'll let you know.

and for the Sight Pics.. picked up a set of the Birchwood Casey "touch up" paint pens.. (had to put the white in my case tumbler to shake it up enough to get the ball barring going)

why they use a huge wide tip I don't know.. you would think a fine tip would be better

I'll let you know about that as well

again, thank you all for your advice.
