Checkering or stippling?

Those of you that have either of these, why do you prefer one over the other? For that matter, those of you who don't have them yet, why?

I have a gun with stippling and two with checkering. They both work well for the intended purpose, but I much prefer the checkered guns (30 lpi). It is prettier and in my opinion just a little more comfortable. However, it is more expensive! I think either one is a valuable addition to a well loved and used firearm.

Erik, I prefer stippling. While checkering may look a little better, you do not see it when your hand is on it. It is functional. It will not show the little dings that could happen to checkering.

I have seen some that look like, to paraphrase Roscoe, "Like the village idiot took a hammer and chisel to it". And some that are very nice.

I have a stainless Kimber that Brian Bilby stippled for me. He did the front strap, replaced the plastic main spring housing with a stippled stainless one, and he even stippled the grip screws. Damn does it look good!

Why pay the extra for checkering?

(Damn, I wish this thing had spell checker embedded in it!)

John,

Do you have any close up pics of it? I am looking for pictures of various stippling designs for a pet project. If you have any, could you post them @ www.thefiringline.com/NonCHI/Forum1/HTML/004704.html Lets try this one more time....Sorry, it won't go through. If you want to go to it manually, its called, "What kind of stippling on an aluminum frontstrap?" Its here in handguns.

Erik,

Above is posted a link to a thread I recently started on stippling.
There's a little more, (I said "little" ;) ), at that thread if you want to check it out. There's a pic of a presentation grade Hi-Power thats been stippled there. Maybe others w/post links to pics there too for your comparison.

EQUALIZER, I posted the picture at the requested thread, "What kind of stippling on an aluminum frontstrap?". It's the best picture I have. Does not really do the work justice.

Since I just got a digital camera, I've starting taking some pictures for my website and since I have people ask me about checkering and stippling all the time, I made a page about it. If you go to www.1911custom.com and go to the checkering vs. stippling page you can see a few.
