What have I gotten myself into??? I have order a new stock for my Mark V (I'm a lefty with a righty action) and need advice on checkering. I am very adept at cabinet making and fine woodworking and finishing but have never carved a thing in my life. I would like any advice in making me make this a showcase piece of work. I plan to hunt with this rifle, not just keep ot behind glass... :)

Buy an old beat up stock and practice on it first. Work on your lay out lines and borders until you get the hang of it and are comfortable working on the curves, go slow and don't worry about the depth of the cuts at first, you can go back and make them all the same depth later. Stick to 2 line cutters until you have mastered it then you can move up to larger cutters.
