cheap nice lockable cases on ebay

Found a pretty good deal on ebay, $20 total inc. shipping for little aluminum gun cases with a rotary combo lock. They have a ton of 'em. Good quality for the price. Great for car carry in those places you need to do so in a locked case, but want to be able to open it up quickly.

the guy did that to avoid overhead charge fee from Ebay. Say you sell item for 1 bucks, you have to pay a couple of cents to Ebay compared selling 20 bucks and pay 1 or 2 dollars to Ebay.

Doggieman,
What exterior size is your case? Is that 11.5"L x 9"W x 3.5"H ? It look pretty small for my two guns which is Ruger Security Six 6" barrel (total length 12") and Beretta 92FS.
Thanks

yes that's the size of the one I have, which would be too small for your guns. However, the same seller has 17" long cases which might be just about right. Click on the second link I provided and you can see his whole range.

Durability

Would it be durable enough to cable lock it to your vehicle seat post and avoid easy removal or being smashed or pried open?

sorta

funny you should ask, because that's exactly what I plan to do with the thing.

The handle itself resists being pulled out, and getting a grip on the case to do so would be difficult if tied closely into the car. On the other hand, I think you could go through the body of the case with the claw-end of a hammer pretty quickly.

I was thinking of drilling a couple of holes through the sides of the case and threading a cable directly through it, running the cable around the metal parts of the seat where it's bolted to the frame. Or cutting half-circles on each side of the lid area so that could open it up, lay a thick cable across it, then close the case on the cable and the half-circles would line up to accept the cable.

I was then thinking of storing it under the back seat of my car, to be slid out and opened in an emergency. Or to be slid out, unhooked from the cable somehow, and used to transport the guns inside. The only problem with the half-circle idea is that the case would have to be opened whenever it was put in the car or taken out, whereas using just say a cable bike lock on the handle would mean I'd have to undo the cable each time but I wouldn't have to open the case.

To answer your question, I think that it depends on how you install the case in the car, but let's say it's of "medium-light" security. The lock latch itself is the weakest part and a thief with a burly arm and a screwdriver could probably bust it open fairly quickly. However a "smash and grab" thief probably would either not see it at all or be unable to deal with it if he saw it.

Plus I was thinking of putting a sticker on it that says something like "DANGER: HUMAN TISSUE SAMPLES" or some other vague weird warning that would make the average burglar, in the few seconds or minutes he has to go through the car, decide he should probably take the golf clubs instead.

I've noticed newer autos with airbags have many wires under the seats (which detect whether a person is riding in the seat, for instance, for deployment purposes). As a result, my 2000 VW and now my 2004 Toyota both have "guards" -- if you will -- which make it nearly impossible to stick your hand or anything else under the seat. God help you if you drop your keys, money, anything of value because it requires a significant operation to retrieve these items. As far as sliding a 4" tall metal case under any of my seats, that's a laughable proposition. I would be required to put it in the trunk, which sorta defeats the purpose of having a light duty aluminum safe for me, anyway. If the thief can get into the trunk that safe isn't going to stop him. And, if it's just attached with a cable, a pair of handheld cutters will cut any small cable quickly.

If you're set on a small safe, get a $20-30 Sentry fire resistant safe of about the same size. It's probably tougher to force open and it offers protection from heat, minor protection from fire (like 30 minutes) and maybe even flooding.

Alternately, I think that the glove box is an okay place. Have a spare glove box key on the keychain with a detachable keyring so you can access it without removing your key from the ignition. It's lockable, light duty, and doesn't take up any space. Hard to break with no tools but probably easy to break with a prybar. Just conceal the gun in a McDonalds brown bag to appear like trash. Outta sight, outta mind. Probably good enough for me.

glove box would be ideal, but where I'm from (CA) you can't store guns in either the glove box or the center console. Has to be in a separate locked box. :(
