cheap holsters?

GUNSNGOLD

New member
i just bought a cheap $25 leather pocket holster, it is made for a J frame but the desc. says it will accomodate a mini glock and other sub compact pistols. iy fits my J frames well, i showed it to my neighbor and he turned his nose up and said you cant possibly buy a holster and have it work for several guns.

i know there are alot of pocket holsters out ther that are not pistol specific and are alot less than the one i bought, i am a cheap skate and could have gone alot cheaper but this had the bells and whistles i wanted. im always trying to spend as little as possible on everything i buy from generc drugs to steel cased ammo.

just wondering what your thoughts are on cheap gear?

Use what works. If you as an individual carry with a cheap holster and it works for more then one gun then thats great, more money to spend on other stuff. Let your neighbor float his own boat however he may. All that matters is it works.

I've found that there are MANY little subtle differences in holsters... angles, cuts, materials, thicknesses, etc... and that sometimes it's kind of mysterious and difficult to say exactly what makes one work better for me than another... Everything comes out in the actual wearing. But my experience has been that price, alone, is not related to whether (or not) one works for me.

I think I know which holster you are talking about. You get what you pay for. Generally, I count on a holster protecting the trigger under all conditions. A looser holster just isn't doing that as well. It might do it well enough for you. I have a zero tolerance policy for shooting myself, hence no loose or holsterless guns in my pockets!

Now that said, a Don Hume is a good generic alternative..

Good Enuff

If it works for you go for it. Shooting, etc. shouldn't have to be expensive. I tend to try to be frugal with my money. I know how hard I have to work to get it. You can find snobs in nearly any aspect of human behavior, guns, homes, cars, whatever. There is always the guy that has to "one up" you too. Anything you did, he did it better. Humans can be kind of annoying sometimes. Do what is good for you.

Cheap holster + a few minutes with a needle and thread = inexpensive custom fit holster. Just picked up a ProTech universal leather holster which was a little loose, after 15 minutes of sewing it now fits my Beretta Tomcat like a glove.

Uncle Mike's or Blackhawk works for me. Anywhere from$9 to$15. Size 4 works for a Glock 26/27, but it also sucks in a S&W j frame.

You ask for peoples opinion on cheap holsters... and then get upset when someone gives you a negative opinion?

Anyway, if it works for you then it works for you. You can generally get by with cheap/unformed pocket holsters but the same cannot be said for hip holsters. The Desantis Nemesis works very well for its purpose. The cheap OWBs, however, have very little use outside of the range. The difference between a quality, gun-specific holster with a good gun belt and cheap airsoft junk (Walmart) is staggering when it comes to carrying a steel frame for 8-10 hours.

i got a $10 ace iwb tuckable holster for my fullsize 1911 which also fits my cz 82. it was cheap, works on both my guns and is really comfortable for carrying either. if it works it doesnt matter if it costs $1 or $100

I just don't think anyone does themselves any favors by buying cheap holsters. I always find it amazing that someone will spend $500 or more on a gun and $10 on a cheap holster. No insult intended, but the word ignorance come to mind every time I hear this. If you buy a gun with the intention of carrying it then a good quality, well fitting holster should also be considered as a part of the package.

Maybe you can get somebody to toss that cheap gear into your
cheap casket and you can take it with you. God knows I don't
want it.

I went the cheap route for many years, I now have the proverbial "junk box" full of cast off and misfit gear, scopes and other assorted gun related detritus that I tried out in my efforts to "go cheap". Ironically it cost me much more than buying quality from the outset. I am not saying that there aren't cheap alternatives that work, but generally quality costs a little more. So now my motto isn't "go cheap", it is "go quality", whatever that ends up costing.

Most of the cheap gear out there...is junk .../ and you might end up with 15 holsters ( none of which will work very well ...) ....but its your money, so you should do whatever you want...

Personally, I'd save my money --- until I could afford to buy the holsters I really want for my guns ....especially if I'm going to carry them. A good horsehide holder - made specifically for the model of gun you want to carry is not cheap / but in the bigger scheme of things where ammo costs a lot ..and range fees, etc .... $ 125 for a good solid leather holster that may last you a lifetime ...is not a bad deal !! There are lots of good options out there - like Kramer leather, FIST, etc...

Yup. A good well made holster that fits the specific gun is worth the price. Cheap holsters will slow you down, dump your gun, and fall apart shortly. I have a box of holsters that seemed like a great deal but didn't work. No more cheap guns or cheap holsters for me. For a CCW gun that might keep you alive a quality holster is as important as the gun and ammunition you choose.
