Cheap Colt

I am always looking for deals on guns, to the point where I will often buy things I don't really need just because the price is right. Case in point is my latest Colt 1911. A few days ago I stumbled into what I though was a decent deal on something I had never seen before, a Colt 1911 frame that was sold by Colt as a frame only.

This was bought new in 1995 and never used, the feed ramp was unmarked and you could tell that there had never been a magazine inserted.

Now, I already had eight 1911's and need another like I need a cement bicycle, but the price was right and the next thing you know, I bought it and was trying to figure out what to do with it. Perhaps use it as a dedicated lower for my Colt.22 conversion unit?

Just two days later I stumbled onto a deal on a M1991-A1 slide assembly that was complete including the barrel, bushing, recoil spring/plunger and spring guide. Once again, the price was right and the die was cast so to speak. I guess I have nine of the darn things now, all in .45 (God's chosen caliber for a 1911). I am pretty happy with it and since I only have $500 in it, my bank account is still largely intact.

Today I am going out into the desert and wring this thing out. I will say that the trigger is remarkably good for a out of the box series 80. I am planning to use it as a test mule to see what mods I can do to improve the trigger (remove the firing pin block, etc.) and maybe try to improve the accuracy depending on how it shoots.

Awesome deal...do you usually look for these kinds of deals online, in store or both? I've just recently started monitoring gun broker auctions that are ending soon to see if I can snag something cheap. No luck yet :(

A tale that warms the cockles of my cold, black heart.

You do NOT need to remove any parts to improve the trigger -- IF it needs to be improved. Go to http://www.m1911.org/m1911dt.htm . On the left side of the screen there's a link to "Technical Issues." Scroll through the technical issues and find the article entitled "Poor Man's Trigger Job."

That was a good score, congrats. I also do and look for similar opportunities and from time to time my gun luck will pay off, though I have never seen a Colt lower like yours. Congrats on the new addition.

I am retired and have way more time than money so I haunt the local shops and check on Armslist almost daily looking for that deal I can't live without. I still work part time doing machine work for a local gun shop and the lower walked through the door a few days ago. The owner of the shop knows that I am a sucker for things like that so he let me have it cheap. I was talking to a friend/customer about my new score and he mentioned that he had the slide assembly laying around and we made a deal for it on the spot.

Mostly I just seem to luck onto deals from time to time, but one thing I have learned over the years is to jump on a good deal without hesitation. I get frustrated when I see people posting on various forums about a particular firearm and basically asking the internet's permission to make the purchase, then losing out on the deal due to dithering around. They have these things called "smart phones" that can access the internet from just about anywhere and a couple of minutes of research can easily tell you if something is worth buying.

It is tough to find deals on Gonebroker due to the national scope of the site, but sometimes a decent deal can be found.

Thanks for the link. I have tried to join 1911.org before but the site won't take the password I registered with and without being registered, I can't seem to contact them. I gave up in frustration a while back, but I guess I should give it another try.

Great deal & fun story!
I hear you about "jumping on it". Several years ago missed out on Colt's $100 rebate for some 1911s, and just last Fall a $650 deal for new Colt Stainless 1911 .45s on Bud's (or GrabAGun - can't remember).

A procrastinator and his money are not soon parted. :(

Those frame kits were often purchased by folks who owned a .22 conversion unit and wanted a complete gun so they didn't have to be swapping it off all the time. (They will accept the SM ACE slide but not the original ACE slide without removing the ejector.)
